Has been the wettest year I remember in 12 years. However, this is not monsoon India - never rains all day - and it should let up a bit beginning about now.
August is still in the middle of rainy season. I think it is somewhat drier than the last 2 years to be honest. Last year the rainy season started early and ended late, and sometimes it did rain for several days at a time almost continuously. This year it hasn't rained everyday until the last week or so, and even then usually for only an hour or so, mostly once a day sometimes twice. Rain is often in the afternoon, evening or sometimes at night.
It will rain more up in Shangri-la, and it will be very cold when it does. In Kunming it's more thunderstorms right now, heavy bursts of rain for 30minutes to an hour. Unpredictable. But so far no flooding.
Count on rainstorms, but not necessarily day long ones. Even in the rainy season, the sun will come out at least part of the day. Also look forward to some beautiful valley fog inversions (the so-called "cloud sea" or 云海 effect). Southern Yunnan is subtropical and tropical, but it's still mountainous, and the mountains can create their own microclimates and shelter you from the rain if you're lucky.
Thank you. I am leaving in 2 days to China, I will go to Yunnan from 18th of August starting from Shangrila, I would like to do some hicking, do you think weather
Forecast would be ok, or should take this idea out my mind. Would it be better doing trecking in xishuangbanna? Is the weather more drier over there?
Thanls for your recommendetions
Two points:
1. This is the rainy season.
2. Xishuangbanna is rain forest
This has got to be the wettest year.
Presently in Jinghong - rains every day, probably more than once, but only briefly, although it can be hard rain; otherwise humid. Temperatures during the day are up to about 28-30 degrees C, pleasant in the evening. Sunlight right now, 6:30pm. My local contact says this has been a wet summer, but it seems to be tapering off a bit.
Thank you for all your answers but i am not sure if i should go or not as the main reason go north yunnan is to hiking but is the weather is gonna be raining and humit maybe is not a good idea to go. Does anyone who is ovethere right now, can tell me how is the weather for hicking? Thanks
