@Jean, Im not negative about China, I'm actually quite positive about China; if I didn't like China I wouldn't be here. On the contrary, Why are you So negative about Chinese girls?

@tonyaod Your description was nowhere near what I experience every year with my Chinese family. Where do you get that from, is it your own experience with family or just a load of complaints stuffed together to make description.

Please don't turn my post into some bickering match. Obviously being with Chinese on Chinese new year is the ideal BUT since I don't have a Chinese family to be with, that's why I asked if there was anything going on for foreigners in Kunming. So telling me I should be with Chinese is extremely unhelpful unless you expect me to walk up to random people and invite myself over.

Thanks.

I don't have a Chinese family too, so Spring Festival for me is the most boring week in the whole year. I wish there was a bit more going on for people who don't celebrate

i think CNY is the best part even without chinese family. All the malls and marts, everything on sale, empty transportation, when the weather is good streets and squares are deserted.

if weather sucks get a good book. a glass of wine or champagne, strawberries or hot chocolate reading back home. binge watching good tv shows (the wire, true detective, family guy....etc.) with other foreign marooners.

or hangout in a cafe (one of the few open ones) and stay there from morning to evening, reading watching...treat yourself.

or go to a spa and sit in a hot spring or whirlpool with occassional massage and food buffet breaks.

i have never been bored at CNY. get some friends with you for a short trip to the mountains for a hike or picnic.

tons of stuff to do.

The big SPA beside the north transit terminal is closed for the holiday. It's the only time all year that it closes.

Unless one marries into a Chinese family, it is unusual to be invited to join a Chinese family for 春节 festivities.

While in Beijing, nearly every Chinese I knew left town to go home. In Kunming, I was close to an extended family with three generations of English speakers and was asked to join them. Usually, I would head to Jinghong for three of four weeks so it was I going out of town.

My last 春节 I spent in Kunming with the family and it was great, but then, I had visited their several homes many times in the ten years I knew them. I felt honored to be invited again and again without obligation.
