Can the OP enlighten me on the purpose of this thread? If there is a way to objectively define what is "good" then maybe I can nominate a best Chinese food in Kunming.
It would be best if one can invoke gastronomic sciences like those taught in ICE (formerly the Peter Kump Culinary School), as a basis for determining the criteria for mediocre, better, best. Armed with this authoritative knowledge, we can then compare who's nomination is really the best. Otherwise it would just be a pissing match which would cause the China-hating morons to accuse you of troll baiting, which we all know, you obviously am not.

The Burger King has a wide selection of items freshly cooked in house by quality Chinese chefs!
You should try it sometime @forlorn, you'll be amazed what these Chinese chefs can knock up ;)
It would help to know what dishes you are interested in. For example...
steamed veggies swimming in oil, stir fried veggies swimming in oil, garlic beef swimming in oil, mystery chicken swimming in oil, etc.
Then we can direct you to the appropriate garage (I mean restaurant)
Kunming Fried Chicken (aka KFC) gets my vote.
