Obviously (I hope), we're all engaging in generalizations, but I think it's worth something to look at historical causation - economic, political, sociological and cultural - we might like to think we are all our own independent creations, but we're obviously not - what is can't be unrelated to what was, even though maybe we like it to be. I'm not offering excuses, just pointing out that cause & effect doesn't disappear because sometimes we'd like it to.
