@Alien
I am pretty sure you are not an American as your estimate of $20,000 for a triple bypass in the US is way way off. I had open heart surgery in the US four times between Dec 1995 and April 1996. Total cost was about $400,000.
I also disagree that a hospital stay is not "rocket science to figure it out..." When your Chinese friends have left and a nurse (?) is standing in front of you yelling, loudly, in rapid Chinese, you will have no idea what is going on. Thankfully, the guy in the next bed had a daughter that spoke English who came everyday. 请说慢点 is a phrase you will use often.

@Yuantongsi
I agree with you 100%
Just one caveat, make sure your evac insurance does not lapse. The yearly bill must be sent to a US address. My son trashed it and when I tried to reinstate it, oops, your are too old!
I had prepared DNRs and Living Wills, translated and notarized, but was told there would be no pulling of the plug. In March, the hospital was refusing to discharge me as the flight home was "dangerous." In front of the doctor saying "No way," I told my sons to go back to the USA, handed them the little RMB I had in my pocket and told the doctor, "Okay. I will stay but now I am your grandfather!" I flew back to the US two days later.
@Geezer: I've never been an inpatient in China - I was referring to outpatient services. It's best to learn Chinese. Do nurses yell at inpatient foreigners a lot in Chinese hospitals? The guy who had the triple bypass didn't mention any of this. His Chinese is almost nonexistent. Enough of the staff at the hospital he went to spoke English so that language was not a problem. In state hospitals this is less likely to be the case, of course - my doctor, however, could speak a little, and pretty much knew the medical terminology in English. $400,000 for 4 operations - okay, I was wrong - it's 5 times more expensive in the US than in an excellent private hospital in Kunming.
laotou: "If you're living in China on a budget - go for the domestic catastrophic health insurance - you pay for the small stuff - and MAYBE they'll pay for the big stuff."
Domestic catastrophic insurance? If you're implying it can cover you in China and the word "domestic" is in the name then I'm assuming it's Chinese medical insurace. Is that right?
@Yuantongsi
What do you mean be evacuations?
If you are really sick and need to be medically evacuated to a better hospital system, ie Not China, then a private plane with highly trained doctors and nurses will take you away for a very reasonable price. This is what medical evacuations are. They cost at least 100k usd.
If you are lying comatose as a vegetable in a Chinese hospital then this is also your fastest way to die. Chinese hospitals are not allowed to pull the plug on a laowai and until your bills are paid they won't let you leave.
@virus4762
Yes - go for PICC etc - the larger carriers. Only problem - like most insurance western companies - they'll try to screw you if it's a big claim - my wife's insurance was 100% denied because we didn't have enough receipts. She went by herself to try to get this done - so they just pushed her off. As the amount was relatively small (1 month's salary), I didn't feel like traveling to her home town to get it done (cost would've been a wash).
Sometimes, I fantasize the government will legalize certain complicated evil people, to ensure lazy,negligent, abusive government and corporate employees properly enforce civil rights and benefits, but I suppose insects aren't particularly self aware and wouldn't care if they got squashed like the bugs they are.
Rest assured that those people who are forced to get Obamacare will also be forced to receive all the vaccines as part of that mandatory program.
NAIP - Now the big push is to vaccinate all adults with all the shots.

it.s a platform for expat healthinsurance plans. i got my wife, my daughter and myself covered by IMG U.K.. it.s basically covering the tiugh stuff. but since medical cost are reasonable in china, there is no need for family doctor coverage. if you have expat insurance, most hospitals are accepted including international ones (some have daily refund limits, though).
@Campo
