Finding a Nanny - are the horror stories true?

amjec (32 posts) • 0

I have a Chinese friend who is looking for a nanny for a part time child minding job for her one year old but she has been figuratively scared to death by the stories she has heard of babies being harmed or the house being cleared out after the parents have left for work.

Do these things actually happen, or are they just apocryphal 'bogeynanny' stories? Are there any reputable Nanny agencies here or is it best to get a nanny through personal recommendation? If so, can anyone recommend a good nanny (via PM) for a three day a week job?

Questions, questions, questions, I know. Any help would be gratefully received!

We got our nanny through an agency and, after a year, arranged to employ her directly long-term. She's pretty good (sorry, you can't have her!) - reliable and responsible.
A colleague of mine advertised on GoK for a nanny, got half a dozen responses, interviewed the most suitable and is happy with the one she has now. So the horror stories may have some basis in truth (be aware) but you can certainly get a good nanny if you are careful and pay competitive wages.

Haha! Thanks Ocean. I was going to PM you about it but the devil in me thought opening it up to hear the horror stories might be fun!

Which agency did you use? I can pass that on and give them a starting point.

Haven't heard the horror stories - has anybody actually experienced any of them, or are they just hearsay?

I saw some pretty worrying stuff caught on secret cameras by suspicious parents. Beating and drugging the kids. Can't believe that level of abuse is widespread though. More common is neglect or petty theft I would guess.

Drugs?? Are we talking Lou Reed style cocaine into the eye sockets, or a rub of Sudafed on the bottle teat? (If it's the first one I want the YouTube link!)

I think my friend has heard stories, and is thus more worried, about major property theft (a van carting off anything that wasn't nailed down as soon as the coast was clear) Again, they might be tales of the 'my friend's uncle's cousin's neighbour said' variety, but anything heard often enough gains credence, I suppose.
