Jazz Concert with Sebastian Schunke Berlin Quartet
Following the invitation of the German consulate in Chengdu, 4 Berlin based Jazz men went on their "Urban Groove China Tour 2015" to also stop over in Kunming.
Performing at the fascinating Elephant art center they will enlight us with "THE MODERN ART OF LATIN JAZZ".
"In short: Everything you thought you knew about Latin jazz - forget it! In “Schunke´s Music” all clichés well-kept by the success of
“Buena Vista Social Club" prove as obsolete. This music based on traditional rhythms from Cuba, Puerto Rico and Uruguay, is intellectual and highly complex without being top-heavy even at one point, it draws its influences equally from European classical music as from post-bop and free jazz."
Band info:
- Sebastian Schunke – piano, compositions (Berlin)
- Dan Freeman – sax (Berlin/Australia)
- Diego Pinera – drums (Uruguay/Berlin)
- Marcel Krömker – bass (Berlin), drums, upright bass, and tenor/soprano sax
A few opinions:
“Schunke´s intellectually saturated Latin Jazz is a real feast for the ears... You can definitely call it a great masterpiece."

“...Schunke ´s skills as a writer and musician deserve applause...”
