Yunnan is one of eight south Chinese administrative regions that issued a health alert for dengue fever last week. According to government information, seven cases of dengue fever were reported to have entered Yunnan in October. The cases are believed to have entered via Myanmar.
Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne tropical disease with symptoms including high fever, dizziness and vomiting that kills 25,000 and infects 100 million each year. In September, China reported 502 cases of dengue fever, 492 of which were in Guangdong province. Although it is a serious disease, the cooler temperatures and fewer mosquitoes in Kunming lately makes it unlikely that we'll be hearing about any cases in the Spring City.
