Giveaway: Improv jazz with Martin Berggren

By in Features on

Live jazz concerts in the Spring City are few and far between, but Swedish jazz pianist Martin Berggren has been enlivening Kunming's music scene for two years.

He has played everything from jazz standards to experimental shows with Vietnamese Đàn tranh musicians. This weekend Berggren will play one final show in Kunming before moving back to Sweden this summer.

His May 5 concert will begin at 8pm and be hosted by TCG Nordica. Berggren will be playing the piano with Jonatan Lundin on bass and Liu Shuang 'Birch' on drums.

The night will feature original and highly improvisational compositions by Berggren, all being played live for the first time.

TCG Nordica has been kind enough to give GoKunming three tickets to Berggren's final concert. We will give away all three of these tickets to the first reader who can answer the trivia question below. Respondents must use our contact form and provide the correct answer as well as their name and phone number.

Thelonious Monk composed and recorded a song called 'Pannonica.' What was it about?

Once we have one, we will announce the winner's name in the comments section of this post.

Good Luck!

We have a winner! Scott Shaffer was the first person to tell us the song was about Pannonica de Koenigswarter, a longtime friend of Monk's and a patron of many New York City jazz musicians. Congratulations Scott.
