Forums > Living in Kunming > extend student visa vs convert to tourist? sorry, i know there have been a million visa questions on here but i can't quite seem to find any that address my case.
my student visa expires at the end of july. my partner has a potential job coming up and could be placed in either chengdu or beijing (or neither, in which case i stay in kunming another semester), but will not find out for sure until early august. when we find out where he's going i will register at a university in one of those cities, get my visa there etc etc. so basically my problem is that i need some sort of visa to carry me through most of august - at least until i can apply for an x visa with a different uni.
what are my options here? i spoke to my school and they said i should just go to the PSB, explain my situation, cross my fingers and hope they find it in their hearts to convert my visa to a tourist one. does this ever happen?? when would i actually need to go to do this?
also may have the option of extending my current student visa another month or whatever, coughing up the 400rmb etc.. but if we end up moving, is it possible/easy to convert a student visa from one school to another?
any advice would be greatly appreciated. would really like to avoid having to do a visa run to another country.
Forums > Food & Drink > where to buy good red wine unfortunately i've found metro to be the only place i can buy (well, afford - i'm a student) reasonable wine. there's a red there for 26rmb from chile, i think, called castle orra or castillera or something like that... goes down pretty well! also have a chardonnay from oz, coldstone or something to that effect, last time i went it was on special for under 40rmb. pretty decent drop - and that's coming from someone who spent the last year in oz drinking way too many whites! would definitely recommend checking it out.
Forums > Travel Yunnan > Yuxi, where to stay? i loved yuxi actually.. good weekend out of the city as it was really quiet, clean.. walking around the streets at night felt a little like being back home in small town canada. families going for walks, not many cars etc. pretty nice. great food and sweet courtyard expat bar too.
Forums > Travel Yunnan > Getting a break from Kunming? sorry - to get to yuxi head to the new south bus station, busses leave every hour and a bit, 18 kuai.. about one hour ride. drops you off in the center of town.
Forums > Travel Yunnan > Getting a break from Kunming? i would recommend yuxi as a great night or two away - also has some pretty hotsprings (cheap one - 64 yuan total got us, for two hours, a private hotspring for two and use of the giant outdoor pool - only one other person in it! expensive one - 120 for full day use of a whooole lotta hotsprings with all different kinds of things in them.. flowers.. milk..fish whatever). yuxi also has some fabulous, fresh food, a great expat bar/restaurant in an old courtyard house called dutch cafe and had really big, clean, quiet streets and lots of interesting nooks and crannies to check out. i'd recommend staying at hotel evride - really new, super clean and a steal at 128 (on elong) a night for a double room.
