My 4mbps telecom connection has gotten progressively worse over the past month or so. Even when things seemed to be working alright I could rarely get over 2 mbps, so I switched to a 2mb connection today and things seem to be exactly the same.

I've started to think that telecom does some very strong prioritizing. Sometimes I can barely get gokunming.com, skritter.cn or caing.com to load at all, yet internet giants like baidu and youku are still plenty fast. Needless to say at these times I can't connect to foreign sites at all.

Perhaps China Telecom is experimenting with tiered service to make their 500kbps service seem like 4mbps.

The GFW is probably messing with the google app engine. Skritter.com isn't working because they use the gae. Also, gtalk works fine, as do all my android google apps.

I hope this is temporary as it's pretty unbearable to constantly use a vpn. I don't know if it's really a protectionist scheme. Does google still have significant market share in anything outside of searches and advertising? Maybe google maps? I don't think many Chinese websites use the google app engine.

Are there any single track trails? Double track? How technical are they? Is most mountain biking simply dirt roads? Do you ride to the trailheads from the city?

I recently moved to Kunming and am planning to buy a bike. I only want to buy one. If there's technical mountain biking out there, I'll get a mountain bike. If everything can be ridden on a 700cc hybrid, I'd rather get that and have a little more speed and range on the pavement.

I'm just suspicious because on a previous visit to Kunming I was taken on a "mountain biking" trip that consisted of riding mountain bikes up a paved road. Maybe that was just my bad luck, and I don't mean to be derogatory, but I'd like to know what's out there before I buy a mountain bike.

Kunming has been in deep water trouble since the 2010 drought, yet very little has been done about it. Digging deeper wells won't fix the main problem: Kunming has millions more residents than it did 10 years ago.

Last fall there was some official talk about possible water shortages and ways to fix it, but no one ever mentioned reducing water use. It amazed me how wasteful Kunming residents were with water less than 6 months after the worst drought in 100 years. I hope it does not take the city actually running out of water for people to change their habits.

What I want to know is, how many restaurants are complicit in using this stuff, and how many just buy the wrong oil cause they are trying to cut cost. If individual restaurants were regularly being outed for using that shit, it might drastically cut down on its use.

I imagine they will buy sika from Japan as that is probably cheaper than trying to buy them from a zoo or conservation here. They certainly aren't going to go out and capture deer in the wild to stock their park, that'd be too expensive.

A hunting park catering to tourists sounds super dangerous. I'm pretty sure Dick Cheney shot a guy in the face on some sort of quail hunting farm/park. Just the thought of Chinese tourists trying to hunt scares me.

If they were going to properly recreate some sort of "hunting" experience that resembled actual hunting, they'd need a pretty large area of forest kept in decently pristine condition.

If they are offering hare hunting for 100RMB though, I imagine the park might be not much more than glorified shooting ranges with animals for targets, which would be pretty pathetic. It would reduce the chance of drunk tourists shooting each other though.
