Thanks for all the pointers, it's been informative and given me some things to think about.

Baoshan does seem to be your generic, run-of-the-mill 2nd or 3rd tier Chinese city. Just need to figure out whether the potential to explore the surrounding areas is worth it or not.

Shame about the border town, I always seem to rock up in places after the 'glory days' have passed ;)

I've received an offer for a position in Baoshan, but apart from the few tourist attractions nearby, there is little information about the city/area online.

Does anyone have any information about the place - standard of living, nightlife, recreation, English speakers in the area etc.?

It isn't my first choice, but its proximity to neighboring countries is tempting.
