Forums > Living in Kunming > Carrefour Giving Up On China

A few years back, Alibaba bought 20% of Suning because it needed a brick & mortar presence. Carrefour is now their opportunity.

Very soon you will see flagship Carrefour on TMall, along with their preexisting TMall Supermarket and HeMa.

Together, same day delivery will become a reality for major cities. Carrefour logistics will be revamped by Cainiao AI at peak efficiency.

Not so much "faking" as rebranding.

Republicans have a history of rebranding bills to nudge public sentiments. Natural gas to "freedom gas" and anti-abortion to "pro-life." Proven by think tanks to be effective. I'm sure you can think of more examples during the Cheney and puppet Bush reign.

Ishmael, the fact Kunming is classified as new tier 1 city without having obtained civilized status makes for a good discussion. Is KM the only city of contradiction ("uncivilized" Tier 1) on the list? Some ranked higher aren't even provincial capitals. I reckon that will change soon.

A few of you may have lived in or visited all fifteen new tier 1 cities and can judge for yourselves the integrity of the rankings. But many of us have not. Without basis of comparison some come to rely on extrapolated data over word-of-mouth subjectivity.

Zhengzhou(#10) and Dongguan(#11) could possibly now be on radar warranting market research. Curious business entities looking in may now become incentivized to visit Kunming and ride the potential BRI wave. A nation yearning to be taken seriously on the global stage, 19 first tier cities has a more robust marketing ring than just 4. A hegemony with perceived 19 metropolises is a powerhouse to be reckoned with.

Alibaba's flagship Hema Supermarket just opened in Kunming. Just had a fantastic, imported Boston lobster feast (>400g) for 73 bucks, after various discount deductions. Mind you lobsters that are still kicking were tad pricier.

This price includes on the spot 'jiagong' cooking preparations (~20rmb per 500g) with at least five cooking methods to choose from. Steamed w/ garlic was divine. Chefs were not frugal with the garlic. Dinning area and utensils provided inside and outside Hema.

The ever popular crayfish (aka freshwater lobsters) are also selling like hotcakes. 1.5kg for 95rmb (with Hema app discount). There's a continuous line for these 1.5kg boxes of cooked, ready-to-eat crayfish. No line if ordered online with their Hema app, delivered to you in one hour. Same goes for everything else in the supermarket.

Overall, I was disappointed with the supermarket itself. Live seafood section, particularly their freshly cooked final products such as the Boston lobsters were impressive.
