Also, @b galipeau is the road from Dimaluo to Deqen at least safe enough to keep as a backup plan (if we get sick or something) or should it be avoided?

@alienew Why avoid airplanes?
@b galipeau I'm VERY glad you mentioned that the Deqen airport is actually in Shangri-La. That may have saved me a nightmare at the end of my trip. Also the trek sounds like a great idea. I just sent Aluo an email. I also tried to call 886 3566 182 (which I got from his website) but it didn't through. If anyone knows another number to reach him, let me know.
Also, are we going to be hit by heavy monsoon rains in this area in June?
Good to know about sleeper buses. I think I will try to avoid them. Also, I had an idea to fly from Kunming to Tengchong and spend a few days there, maybe hike in the Gaoligong mountains. From there take a bus to liuku and head up to Fugong. I think I'd rather spend time in tengchong rather than Dali. How does that sound?
Also, can anyone can confirm whether the road from Gongshan to Deqen is open? I read that it had opened last december but I haven't been able to confirm this. This whole itinerary kind of depends on that. Assuming it's open, does anyone know how I could hire a ride from Gongshan (or Bingzhongluo) to Deqen?
