Forums > Food & Drink > Chinese perception of foreign restaurants @dolphin Thanks for the article, but it's almost five years old. There must be dozens of McDs in Vietnam by now. Shit, I wished I had known about the "rigorous" selection process for a franchise partner. It says the PM's son-in-law actually worked at a McDs in his teens. Me too!
Forums > Food & Drink > Chinese perception of foreign restaurants @alienew Yes, I don't recall any price hikes at restaurants in my 13 years here. I was thinking of merchandise/services. When I try buying
merchandise or services on which there is no price labeled, I will very often be overcharged for being white. This is why my (Chinese) wife buys things for me instead. Incidentally, I guess black people are perceived as poor by the Chinese. An African American colleague of mine tell me she has hassles at the bank because they don't believe she could make the Western salary that our school deposits into her account. They thought it must have been an error.
Forums > Food & Drink > Chinese perception of foreign restaurants No, I don't think the Chinese will boycott any such franchises, not over a trade war. Maybe in the event of a confrontation in the S. China Sea or an "accidental" bombing of one of their embassies, but not this. If anything, the locals may charge more laowai taxes, more often. You know, the price hike they often do when they see the consumer is white.
Forums > Living in Kunming > Good news for pandas and panda lovers! @bilingual Thanks for the update. I hope this all goes well - panda habitat expansion and a better life for those people who will have to move.
