Forums > Study > Changing from tourist to student visa in Kunming?

Hello everyone,

I will be coming to Kunming to study at KUST in less than a month. The problem is that I will probably be arriving with a tourist visa, since I am currently working in China and can get this without leaving the country. KUST told me that they can convert the tourist visa to a student residence permit, but they are on holiday until Feb. 25.

However, the latest I can apply for my tourist visa is Jan. 24. The visa is for 31 days, but I'm afraid I won't be able to convert this to a residence permit until KUST reopens after Spring Festival on Feb. 25, which is more than 31 days.

Does anybody know of a possible solution to this problem? Since KUST already gave me all the necessary paperwork for getting a student visa, would it be possible to go to the PSB in Kunming myself to apply for a student visa or residence permit before Feb. 25?

I have tried to contact KUST about this but they are extremely unresponsive. I've sent them a whopping seven emails about it with no reply.

I appreciate any help or advice you can offer.

Thanks.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Cheap places to stay in Kunming for about a month?

Hello everyone,

I will be attending KUST starting March 1, 2016. I will be arriving in Kunming in late January, but the problem is that I cannot move into the dorms until Feb. 25th. So I will have to find a place to stay for about one month until I can move into the dorms. Does anybody know of any good cheap hostels or hotels in Kunming that I could stay at for this length of time?

I would greatly appreciate any information regarding this.

Thanks everyone.

Thanks for the reply. I was a little confused what you meant though when you said:

"I wouldn't have posted this were you already receiving a stream of answers, as it is, even those who are always eager to help are probably just shrugging their shoulders."

Did I breach forum etiquette or something with my last post? It got two down votes and I'm not really sure why...I was just asking some simple questions related to the forum topic...

So I contacted KUST and asked them some questions about getting a student visa. I told them I currently have a work visa (I'm currently an EFL teacher in China). All they said was "sorry we can't admit you to the university because we can't change a work visa to a student visa." Really helpful. It's like they are actively discouraging people from attending the university.

Does anybody have any experience with this? Can't I just go to Hong Kong to apply for a student visa? Or get a tourist visa, come to Kunming, and then change it to a student visa?
