Forums > Living in Kunming > Teaching in Chenggong - Living by the main campus

My wife recently got a job teaching at Yunnan University. We recently found out that all her classes will be at the Chenggong Campus.

We are looking to live downtown Kunming and would like some advice and insight about how far it is to travel by ditie subway.

Do you think it is too inconvenient to live in the city? Perhaps we should just move to the Chenggong area.

Your insight would be greatly appreciated. thanks

I agree with debaser. For short term this is ok if you want to live a simple life (not saving for retirement, a savings for emergencies medical or financial, or children's education etc.) then 5000 is ok.

But life happens, and when it does it's very very expensive. What happens when you get into a scooter/car accident? You Laptop/cellphone is stolen? What happens when you kid needs new clothes?

I may be wrong, but it seems irresponsible financially to not save for the things listed above. Again that is only my view

It's not enough for some guys either. Kunming's average income is incredibly low. I'm shocked to find out how low it actually is. Scooters, cell phones, and cars still cost the same as they cost elsewhere in China.
