Thanks for everyones thoughts and perspectives. it has given us a lot to think about and consider. I made a Kunming/Chenggong Pro/Pro list to help me sort out my thoughts.

Alien: There are a lot of new empty housing units in the area, and a lot of teachers at universities there who make the commute from central Kunming to teach daily rather than live in the Chenggong area or in university housing there, for which many are eligible. That should tell you something.

can you please elaborate on that last sentence? What reasons do teachers prefer to commute from central Kunming? I really want to get different perspectives on the reasons why teachers choose this choice. Is it because their kids go to school in the city?

Haali, yes actually YunDa offered us a choice of either a free apartment at Yunnan University Hotel or a 2000rmb living stipend.

Living in Chenggong pros

1. convenient to YunDa
2. quiet, comfortable, and a very livable environment

3. cheap housing and cost of living

Living in Kunming pros

1. city life convenience and activities

2. more social opportunities with peers our age.
3. lots of restaurants and coffee shops

3rd Option Guandu district pros

1. close to subway

2. 30 minutes away from the city center and campus.
3. more activity (shopping, restaurants, etc.) than Chenggong

is there anything I'm not seeing or taking into consideration? I want to make a well thought out decision where I commit to live this next year. thanks again everyone. you all have been a great help.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Expiring residence permit 2015

I have heard it takes about 15 working days to get the residence permit. My permit expires July 31, 2015, does anyone know if I need to receive a new permit before the expiration date?

Or can I just submit it anytime before that date, receiving it after July 31 without a fine? Is there a fine if I don't receive it before July 31st?

In other words, do I need to submit the paperwork 15 working days before it expires?

opper: per also consider somewhere between Erji lu and New Asia Athletics

Brilliant idea!

At present, there is more activity (restaurants, shopping, etc) in this part of Kunming (southwestern Guandu district)

Sounds great actually! how is compared to Kunming downtown?

John: the flowers here are fresh and cheap,I think you could send them as gift to your wife every day.10RMB for 3 - 5 bundles of rose.

Great advice dude! :)

Again thanks for all the feedback!

Thanks so much for your input guys. I'm very grateful.

The reason my wife applied for the job at YunDa is because we both fell in love with the city and thought that this would be a nice place to live for a while.

Then we found out that the classes are at Chenggong campus. At first I thought I would be bored living at the Chenggong campus since I love the city life in Kunming. Now I'm more open to the idea. I'm not completely sold yet though. I really love Kunming city.

Also I would like to make and meet friends our age (we are in our 30's) while living there.

These are just my thoughts. I have actually no idea how life there will actually be. I can't wait to move to Kunming at the end of July! :)
