Why do you always ask such provocative questions and then complain about the outcome? Why dont you just discuss certain matters with people you know in real life. Have a conversation face to face and know whats the other persons' background.

Besides. What can I see and experience in my everyday life about Chinese Culture?
- the relation between family members and people they have guanxi with is familiar and rather close. Whereas they give a shit about people outside their circle.
—-> this leads to the reckless and selfish behaviour and attitude you can 'enjoy' every day.
- for more than 100 years the Chinese government and scholars try to civilise (wenming) the public such as 'wash your face and hands', 'properly dress', 'comb your hair', 'dont spit on the street' etc.
The reality after 100years? No change. Well, 100years ago people couldnt flush the toilet because there were no flushings. Today girls just dont want to flush and they like to leave their sanitary products spread open in the rubbish bin. Well, not everyone is interested in what stage of the monthly period the girl who just left the toilet is.
And, there is no soap and paper towls!
Particulary nice are all the sayings and Chengyus about: Boys are more valuable than girls.
And: Hitting children is absolutely fine and only helps them to become a good person.
Spending time with prostitutes and 'drinking girls' (san pei xiaojie) is absolutely fine and no reason to get divorced.
Obedience: Chinese people dont dare to complain to people above them. And in order to impress their seniors they build huge buildings (pure waste). But dont spend money on useful things that people would see e.g. pipelines and sewage system.
As someone stated before: Chinese foreign policy over the last hundreds of years. Definitely not the nice neighbour.
The lack or nonexistence of process of coming to terms with one's past. Note, some Western countries are also short on that.
The list could go on for ages.
Forums > Living in Kunming > I love Kunming - Except . . . @Cromson: Sorry, but Chinese crazy constructions have nothing to do with european style. Here they dont care about the basics when constructing and planning skyscrapers, like they cant be too close to each other —> no light on the ground, air turbulences and so on.
The worst thing I've seen so far are the universitiy campuses in Chengong: huge buildings (Albert Speer couldnt have constructed it better), low quality and it makes you feel lost between these building or when crossing a street. When two 8 lane streets create at least 100square metres of of blank asphalt. For me, Chengong is a waste of money and precious ressources.
Forums > Living in Kunming > starving for books, the revenge of the librarian Yes, past the market and before the T-crossing to Cuihu nan lu.
The Name of the library is:
云南省图书馆
Forums > Living in Kunming > starving for books, the revenge of the librarian @Elisa.
The library is on Qianjujie. When you are on Wenlinjie, you have Wenhuaxiang to your right and Qianjujie to your left. Go down Qianjujie and the library will be on your left hand side.
You can read the books in the library for free. When you want to borrow some books, you need 500kuai deposit, your address in Chinese and your passport. Some books can only be read inside the library.
About the children's books I'm not sure. But the library is huge, so you might be able to find what you are looking for.
By the way, when you enter the building on groundfloor, left and right of the reception desk there are computers. You can use them to look for specific books ;-)
Kunming neighborhoods face water rationing
发布者As I said before: Complete mismanagement and ignorance. What really makes me laugh is, on the one hand it's drought, but they still water the plants in my xiaoqu with tap water and of course in the afternoon when sun is at it's peak. On the other hand when it's raining, and heavy rain is very common here, everything is flooded within minutes.
By the way, who helps the elderly people to carry their water buckets into their apartment?
Life in Kunming: A cabbie's perspective
发布者@magnifico: In China everyone asks anyone about their income. Also about your age. Back home a no go, but here absolutely fine.
Plus, it's a general question about this particular industry. Might even be the case, that taxi drivers here in China have a good income not like the ones back home.
Still waiting for the answer of the question: How much does a taxi driver make per month?
Kunming neighborhoods face water rationing
发布者@Elisa: Good question, because for watering the streets 中水 (reclaimed water) is used not tap water.
Kunming neighborhoods face water rationing
发布者The questions is: What causes the drought? Is it the vast destruction of the environment (cutting down forests, removing whole mountains, building dams and so on) or is it only because of climate change as some Chinese government 'experts' say. If you know the answer, you can solve the problem instead of just cutting the water supply.
Second question: Does Kunming and Yunnan use up more water then they posses?
Growing agricultural and flower sector (plants need water and animals use up huge amounts of water during their lifetime), changing life style (cars, meat and so on), mining, construction sites (you need water for mixing concrete and while the concrete dries) and so on
Are there ways to use the water more efficient and not waste it?
Non leaking pipelines and more clarification plants...
I clearly doubt, that any of the government officials would ever think that far. Beijing is the best example. They havent got enough water, so they redirect water from the Yangtze river which is just 1500km away. Not considering the vital consequences...
Kunming neighborhoods face water rationing
发布者The problem is not the drought. It's the complete mismanagement of precious ressources. Instead of spending money on the construction and maintainance of the water system (pipelines) and the waste water system including clarification plants, Yunnans officials rather spend it on prestige buildings. Why? Because the officials on the next higher level will only judge on what they see, meaning above surface.
It's very easy: If you already havent got enough of something, dont waste it.
