Why do you always ask such provocative questions and then complain about the outcome? Why dont you just discuss certain matters with people you know in real life. Have a conversation face to face and know whats the other persons' background.

Besides. What can I see and experience in my everyday life about Chinese Culture?
- the relation between family members and people they have guanxi with is familiar and rather close. Whereas they give a shit about people outside their circle.
—-> this leads to the reckless and selfish behaviour and attitude you can 'enjoy' every day.
- for more than 100 years the Chinese government and scholars try to civilise (wenming) the public such as 'wash your face and hands', 'properly dress', 'comb your hair', 'dont spit on the street' etc.
The reality after 100years? No change. Well, 100years ago people couldnt flush the toilet because there were no flushings. Today girls just dont want to flush and they like to leave their sanitary products spread open in the rubbish bin. Well, not everyone is interested in what stage of the monthly period the girl who just left the toilet is.
And, there is no soap and paper towls!
Particulary nice are all the sayings and Chengyus about: Boys are more valuable than girls.
And: Hitting children is absolutely fine and only helps them to become a good person.
Spending time with prostitutes and 'drinking girls' (san pei xiaojie) is absolutely fine and no reason to get divorced.
Obedience: Chinese people dont dare to complain to people above them. And in order to impress their seniors they build huge buildings (pure waste). But dont spend money on useful things that people would see e.g. pipelines and sewage system.
As someone stated before: Chinese foreign policy over the last hundreds of years. Definitely not the nice neighbour.
The lack or nonexistence of process of coming to terms with one's past. Note, some Western countries are also short on that.
The list could go on for ages.
Forums > Living in Kunming > I love Kunming - Except . . . @Cromson: Sorry, but Chinese crazy constructions have nothing to do with european style. Here they dont care about the basics when constructing and planning skyscrapers, like they cant be too close to each other —> no light on the ground, air turbulences and so on.
The worst thing I've seen so far are the universitiy campuses in Chengong: huge buildings (Albert Speer couldnt have constructed it better), low quality and it makes you feel lost between these building or when crossing a street. When two 8 lane streets create at least 100square metres of of blank asphalt. For me, Chengong is a waste of money and precious ressources.
Forums > Living in Kunming > starving for books, the revenge of the librarian Yes, past the market and before the T-crossing to Cuihu nan lu.
The Name of the library is:
云南省图书馆
Forums > Living in Kunming > starving for books, the revenge of the librarian @Elisa.
The library is on Qianjujie. When you are on Wenlinjie, you have Wenhuaxiang to your right and Qianjujie to your left. Go down Qianjujie and the library will be on your left hand side.
You can read the books in the library for free. When you want to borrow some books, you need 500kuai deposit, your address in Chinese and your passport. Some books can only be read inside the library.
About the children's books I'm not sure. But the library is huge, so you might be able to find what you are looking for.
By the way, when you enter the building on groundfloor, left and right of the reception desk there are computers. You can use them to look for specific books ;-)

发布者@faraday: Now I see your point about khat. These sort of political decisions happen quite a lot. You never know if they were and to what extend they were influenced by the lobby.
Comming back to the point of discussion. I just believe, that no one has the right to decide who should live and who should be put to death. Especially supporting it by saying everyone should serve a purpose. That's faschist logic. I personnally dont think it's appropriate to say things like that neither in a forum nor in real life whether it's a joke or meant serious.

发布者@faraday: Khat is not harmless. There are a couple of studies from various organizations and from different countries that prove the opposite of what you just said.
And for HFCAMPO: Coming from a country without death penalty and where death penalty is also considered murder, your attitude makes me sick. But hey, only developing countries like Europe, Russia, Ruanda, Ukraine and so on banned the death penalty.
Well at least advanced countries like the States, Yemen, China and North Korea still keep it. And because Europe is not exporting lethal injections to the States anymore, you are even considering using the electric chair again and think it's ok to use some lethal injections without prior testing? As a convict has no right to get a painless death. C'mon even every vet from the countryside can put a dog to sleep...
And how do you define purpose? What about the obese, the sick, the disabled, the old, the homeless? The street children in East Europe and Russia sniffing glue and other things to life on the streets. People esp. women trapped in human trafficking are forced to take drugs to stop them from running away. Ampethamines and crystal meth were given to American, British, German and Japanese soldiers so that they can fight much longer and care less about the risks.
I suggest for next time, just think before you write something. It gets into this mmteacher kind of attitude.

As I said before. You have to be very careful when you use sentence like "Get rid of the demand - just execute all drug users since they serve no purpose in any society."
This statement is inhuman! In my country the freedom of speech ends where human dignity is violated! Millions of people were killed because people said they dont serve any purpose. Shame on you, seriously!

发布者@HFCAMPO: Alcohol and cigarettes are also drugs.
'they serve no purpose in any society' you have to be very careful when you say somehting like that. It's very similar to what some people said between 1933 and 1945 in Germany about certain groups in society!
