Forums > Living in Kunming > Good stuff that makes Yunnan (China) such an amazing place to live.

I have been to Kunming several times over the years and I have always said that if it were not for my wife, Kunming is the place in China where I would want to live.

Cool summer weather, seemingly good nightlife, SE Asia a short hop away by plane. Dali and Lijiang are not that far away, especially Dali which would make for a nice three or four day getaway. Yunnan is the most beautiful province in China, unlike most of China is not overpopulated or polluted. There is a cross section of peoples there also which would be fascinating.

I know there are problems there like anywhere else, like recently which has been said and does not need to be commented further. One big negative you guys have is that for most of us, coming back to our home countries involves a long plane trip to a hub city and then crossing the ocean, which would be expensive. The only ones exempt from this would be Australians.

I would love to retire in Dali, open a guesthouse and live my life there. I would love it and would never leave. Seriously. If John Denver or Lynard Skynard were Chinese, the hit songs would be about Yunnan instead of West Virginia or Alabama.

Asanee,

The PSB renewed your Residence Permit, but you are required to give them a criminal check within six months? Is someone from your home going to mail you this?

Where did you read or hear that in September that this requirement may be abolished? That does not really make much sense on either count.

At least for Americans, all they had to do was go to this cite.

www.nsopw.gov/en-us/Search

The sex offender registry on this site pulls the sex offense nationwide instantly. The criminals check costs money but the sex registry is free. This is accurate because there is a sex offender about five houses down from my parents. I also personally knew a sex offender although at the time I did not know this. Easy to look up.

I dare to say the UK, and other English speaking nations have these cites available.

No one really knows what the rules will be or won't be on criminal checks.

Beijing is NOT the first place in China to require this. Shenzhen has had this requirement since 2009 or so. Oddly Inner Mongolia has asked for checks since around that time also.

Beijing also did not start making people who renew on July 1 go home either. Basically if your application was pre July 1, you were under the old rules.

I have read that the check will only be for initial applications and not renewals in Beijing. This is even mentioned by an American lawyer on his blog Law and Border.

But I read on eslcafe where someone in Shandong stated that they were told that they had to get one when they renewed. Even on this thread, there are different accounts. One guy said his PSB liaison told them that it will only be for initial applications and not renewals, with someone else stating that SAFEA wants everyone that renews to go back to their country and get this.

In my city of Hangzhou, I was told by a cop that they do not know what the law will be and it will be finalized probably in August. The first person I talked to was a young female cop and she did not have a clue. Me "next year, can I renew my Residence Permit or do I have to go home?" And she told me the soon to be outdated rule. Te more informed male cop wasn't that much more informed but he was the one who told me about August. He also gave me a number to call instead of going to the Entry Exit place, but the women on the line were worthless and had no information whatsoever.

So, no one really knows, but the check is happening and even if they are cool and let people renew next year without it, how many years can one work in one school? Or maybe one wants to move somewhere else.

I have a DUI from 1996 and having this happen because of some pedos really makes me angry, amd I have been stressed for a month over this, and see my nice life here coming to a crashing end. I am married to a citizen and I hope I can just stay with her on an L visa. She does well, but we are not so rich that I can sit on my ass and do nothing ( and not be allowed to do anything) while she makes all the money. Serious stuff.

Lastly, I would think the problem in Yunnan is not the pedos but the dirty hippies and the drugs. That is another thing that China is blaming us for, the increase of drugs into the country, especially weed and heroin. Yunnan is the Humboldt County of China and one can buy dope as easy in Guangzhou as anywhere else in the West. There was one idiot recently who was caught basically bringing in a suitcase full of brick weed. Another moron was caught smuggling heroin and weed into Zhejiang. At least I am not them, praise Buddha.
