Forums > Travel Yunnan > Kunming to Guangzhou train Making a run to gz next week. Not in any hurry so I thought maybe it would be a good idea to take the train. cheaper than flying and perhaps get to see some of the country in between? Anyone done this route — is it at all enjoyable? Its a long way so I thought it worth asking. Thanks.
Forums > Study > Is this exploitation? I don't think of the word exploitation as implying force. Just semantics I guess, and it doesnt really matter.
Yeah I had just spoken with a couple folks in a homestay program recently. None of what they said sounded good. So I thought it fit the bill under "exploitation."
I think its in the same vein as those placement agencies that make you pay to volunteer. They're all shams, that unfortunately a certain number of people will not see it before its too late.

Forums > Study > Is this exploitation? Exploitation for sure. Same goes for all those "homestay" programs in China. They tout cultural experiences and language study to naive foreigners overseas. But if you read the subtext, whats really happening is underpaid or work for free English teaching.
Forums > Living in Kunming > Chinese Tourists Hostel etiquette is properly shocking here too. Admit shouldnt be expecting much out of 35 Kaui dorm. But the lack of respect for sharing space is unparalleled.
Kunming ranks fifth nationally in expat poll
发布者Louis - Glad you read the forum and stopped. "the agent arranged a No pay intern job for me". I pretty well guarantee you can set this up on your own once you arrive, if you are willing to put in some leg work. I glanced at the website, didn't read all the specifics so I can't tell you exactly all the ways this program may be a ripoff.
But I can tell you this. There is an extremely high probability that you are indeed being gamed to one degree or another. The nice sounding package they arrange for you probably sounds good on paper but in all likelihood is not that good. Heard countless stories about people being charged exorbitant prices to intern or volunteer. Often the organizations care little if the work you do is useful or what type of experience you have. If you pay their fee thats the extent of it.
My advice — come here spend a week checking things out. What type of work you want to do, whats available, actual costs of living and food. Then you can make a slightly more informed decision. Maybe this program is the exception, my guess is its the same as all the others. A business masquerading UNICEF.
How bad is Kunming's air?
发布者I'm not American. But close enough to know that fox news is a highly questionable source of information.
Although its subtle, I'm starting to see a certain trollishness to what you say. Unfortunately I took the bait. Good luck finding someone willing to discuss 9/11 conspiracies with you mate. Have a nice day.

发布者I was simply highlighting temperature statistics — because what you were saying was factually at odds with reality.
"Lets hope we are in a trend that will reverse itself soon." Yeah lets hope.
How bad is Kunming's air?
发布者"no, not necessarily" — Yes, necessarily.

I'll be sure to watch the video, right after I finish the "9/11 was inside job" doc. Sorry mate but you've lost me, along with any logical basis to stand on.
How bad is Kunming's air?
发布者I think "global warming" as a term ended up with too much baggage, climate change is more comprehensive. But by definition its still accurate, statistically the world is getting warmer. If your trotting out the good old "well it snowed today. So where is global warming?" argument. About all I can do is sigh
