Geezer - in some way it all reminds me about the very surprising study about the "average" human face. Google for it, its well worth a look. Turns out, the average face (using software to combine thousands of faces) is absoloutely gorgeous! The explanation offered is that the averaging process irons out all the wrinkles and blemishes. Could the same effect be valid for economies and societies?

Misfit: its a religion to me. I've never sold water in a desert for $100 but i have sold western condoms in asia for €5. :P

I'm sorry for leading this thread so far off topic. I think we should be optimistic about the future of discrimination of all kinds. It WILL disappear, and I personally believe economic policy is the key. I do NOT believe equal-rights legislation will help at all. What about the line in a David Bowie song "we can force you to believe, and we can force you to be free"...really?

Yes! Actually I forget the source but will try to remember and PM you if i can. Likely that something can be found in Wealth of Nations. Are you an economist, could it have been Adam Smith? I've seen several case studies, all of them on a micro scale. Harlem in NYC during the 1960's is the one that comes to mind most. Yes of course this was at a time of problems, black panthers etc., but according to commentaries about that time (refer to e.g. brothermalcolm.net, search around and you should find some studies there), the locals set up their own economies which quickly developed into the scenario I described - IF one can manage to filter out the men of violence and their actions.

Forums > Study > methods employed by foreign english teachers

There is the inbuilt assumption that all foreigners speak good English. It's a form of prejudice. The kids are just as likely to learn bad English by talking to random foreigners - in fact they're MORE likely to learn bad English in this way. The exercise has no benefits whatsoever as far as learning a language is concerned, and the points raised by english_tutour did not convince me.
Regarding general confidence-building and personal development, I don't think its an appropriate method at all, and if this is the goal it should at least be coordinated with parents and staff, and be a documented part of the school curriculum.

I repeat my earlier conclusion that speaking a language with new people IS educational, IF and only if it is supervised.

There's no end to the number of potential scenarios for discrimination. You never know when you're gonna be on the giving or receiving end. For instance, do you discriminate against racists? If it's not one thing, it's another. That's why I maintain that a free market, i.e. really free, not screwed by subventions and price controls, would be a fix-all solution worth trying.

A proven fact is that a truly free market leads to separation (as opposed to integration), for example between races, ages and genders. My unproven theory is that acceptance would flourish in this scenario. In fact it's been observed on a micro scale in some New York hoods. We'll never know for sure, I guess.

I have a picture from outside a Chinese shop written in English and Chinese, it reads, "This shop does not receive the Japanese, the Philippines, The Vietnamese, and the Dog". I was very impressed by the capitalization, even the Dog gets a big D. That shows respect...or?

So what do y'all think are the chances of Britain benefitting from these events? What works for/against them? Certainly looks like the Great Britain events are being boycotted by the local britons...seems to me a bad sign if they cant even try to build relations with their own landsmen and women.

Well if it tastes good and might even do you some good, why not? The soup in the picture looks pretty tasty to me.

About tcm vs western drugs. Have any of you seen the VOLUME of tcm drugs people get? People are literally filling shopping bags at the tcm pharmacies.

As for western meds - i saw a docu which showed that for several drugs, the capsule itself was more beneficial tjan the actual drug inside :) Point 2 about western drugs: theres up to 6000% difference between the cost to produce and the price on the shelf. Whacked out.

Excellent. Everything you want is here, almost..new and used. Plenty of curiosity items, nostalgia, fakes, practical household items, bikes and e-bikes, tools, clothing, furniture etc. I was looking for a cheap portable DVD player but though there were plenty available, they were at best "last years model" ie too bulky.
Easy to spend a half day here, i dont feel like i got treated as a rich laowai i.e. first prices quoted were not outlandish, and the only problem was a lack of food options. Also - little or no putonghua here.

I disagree with the article on two points: 1. Its very taxi-friendly, or at least not worse than anyplace else i've been. Lots of empty taxis pass by (if you walk to the road, of course) 2.i thought it very easy to find and is on google maps.

Hm ok banning cars won't work. How about a toll? Many countries and cities have done it - and by the way a discount for eco-friendly cars.

Friendly staff and good service, food and prices are ok. No complaints but its nothing special either, and not worth a visit unless you live closeby.

Nice atmosphere and cosy but the western food is bad. I think they deep-fry the burgers. As a cafe - 4 stars (service is a little bit lacking at times), coffee and cakes etc are good. As a restaurant, 2 stars (western food is too bad, asian food is mamahuhu).

"All the Meat" only had about 3 slices of salami on it, so maybe i got the wrong order. Anyway, leaving that aside - soggy bread, ketchup as tomatosauce, and cheese was probably from a tube.
Potato wedges soggy as well.
I left half my meal, the only thing up to scratch was the coke and the service. Will not be back.

If the name of the shop is written in english then they should speak english, yes! A pokey shithole trying to give the impression of a quaint li'l ole bookshop. Pig-ignorant staff, never been greeted with a smile there, nor even greeted. If you must shop here, bring your own bag. 1 star earned for selection and the (for me) convenient location.
