Catholic churches are labelled "tian zhu jiao" (in Chinese). Protestant churches are labelled "ji du jiao".
Hitchens smitchens! I seriously doubt that Hitchens or Dawkins have anything to say that Voltaire didn't say better 250 years ago. (Certainly their followers don't; they much resemble born-again zealots.) Moreover, Voltaire didn't have to explain away all the imperialist and nationalist and social darwinist and marxist massacres of the last two centuries.
In any case, on the proper days, I want to perform the proper riturals, and I want to remember my dead Catholic mother in the Catholic Church of Kunming.
Can anyone tell me the current address of Kunming's Catholic church(es)? There used to be a big one at the intersection of Beijing and Jinbi, but it was torn down some years ago. Where is the replacement? All Soul's Day is approaching.
I used to avoid talking to fellow laowai. I had gotten tired of explaining why I wasn't rich, why I wanted to live outside the US, why I was such a failure, blah., blah, blah. I even hid my face on buses sometimes. But I don't care anymore.
As for Chinese people staring, wear old-fashioned Chinese clothing and they'll think your from Sichuan. It worked for G.E. Morrison and it works now.

The beer is good. The food, OK, if you're dying for something Western. Food service is better in the daytime, mamahuhu in the night time.
I haven't stayed in their guesthouse, but I'll guess it's noisy in the night times.

There are other branches in Wen Lin Jie and in Lijiang.
I've been a long time customer of the Wen Lin branch.
Both Kunming branches are pleasant places to meet and chat with friends.
The food may not be the cheapest, but the cheapest would be from the street vendors.
I meet and drink coffee with friends at the Wen Lin PC several times weekly, especially since the Yun Joy Cafe is no more.
I've been drinking Beer Lao and coffee here, off and on for some years.
It's always a pleasant place to relax. The food is good as well. Close to cheap hotels and bike rental on Manting Lu, too.

Book Review: Joseph F. Rock and His Shangri-La
发布者Goullart mentions Rock a couple times in _Forgotten Kingdom_ a couple times. He always refers to him formally as "Dr Joseph Rock."
Goullart's books like _Land of the Lamas_ or _Forgotten Kingdom_ are quite interesting in their own right. Goullart also deserves a bio, but I suspect it'd be harder to research.
