Take but #55 to the old West bus station, get off and walk to the opposite of the street. Walk down the alley you see descending and you'll find a cluster of zhaodaisuo (hostels) serving students, and maybe you. The Think UK apartment complex is next door. I don't know the prices but they can't be too high. Expect simple accomodations.
Richard Dawkins: by reputation, a first-rate geneticist, but a crap historian. At least not a vile cheer-leader for mass-murder in Iraq and Afghanistan, like his competitor, C. Hitchens.
You might also try Bai Yun Tao Bao City, on Bai Yun Lu, a block or so east of the intersection with Bei Jing Lu. It's a couple blocks east of the site of the former huge open air market on Bai Yun Lu. I suspect that about 1/2 the vendors have moved to Tao Bao.
Total, I would say the main problem is the cars. Let the vendors and their customers alone. As for "flouting the law", this is not America! If it were, I'd move away again.
There used to be a lot of street food vendors on Jianshe Lou and in front of the Yun Da guesthouse. They were great, until someone in power had them chased away (probably with the excuse "that's not what they do in America!!"). Now that some are coming back to Wen Hua Xiang, I am happy. Maybe the restaurants will get to have outdoor tables again. If I wanted to do all my shopping in Walmart, etc., I'd live in the USA.

发布者Displacing farmers to make way for suburban developments around China may have a lot to do with the high price of food lately.
Getting Away: Jinghong
发布者I've often enjoyed relaxing at the Banna Cafe, as well.
Bicycle ambassadors leave Kunming for Southeast Asia
发布者Too bad this won't promote bike riding, discourage cars.
