Imagine being unable to write your own language; would it save you time?
It's hard to remember the characters for reading if you don't write them!
Crazy Laowai, you might look for the different kinds of stir-fried insects. Bee grub and bamboo worms are crunchy, perhaps like cheese doodles but healthier. I had dragonfly larvae, dipped in hot oil, then served. Not bad at all — they had a delicate flavor that I can' t describe.
Probably these are more common in Dai restaurants, but found elsewhere, too.
I've had a good experience with the "Stomatology Hospital" (i.e., Dental Hospital) of the Kunming Medical School on Renmin Lu. At least one dentist had good English. I know the Medical School has English classes for it's students.

The beer is good. The food, OK, if you're dying for something Western. Food service is better in the daytime, mamahuhu in the night time.
I haven't stayed in their guesthouse, but I'll guess it's noisy in the night times.
Prague Cafe in Bei Chen Walking Street is Prague III.
There are other branches in Wen Lin Jie and in Lijiang.
I've been a long time customer of the Wen Lin branch.
Both Kunming branches are pleasant places to meet and chat with friends.
The food may not be the cheapest, but the cheapest would be from the street vendors.
I meet and drink coffee with friends at the Wen Lin PC several times weekly, especially since the Yun Joy Cafe is no more.
I've been drinking Beer Lao and coffee here, off and on for some years.
It's always a pleasant place to relax. The food is good as well. Close to cheap hotels and bike rental on Manting Lu, too.

Kunming discovers two more fake Apple stores
发布者There used to be a lot of pirated Penguin books and Oxford U. Press books in Chinese universities, used to teach literature. Then Penguin and OUP wised up, started producing their books in China, adding some notes in Chinese, selling them at a price reasonable for Chinese students. No one uses the pirated copies any more. Most foreign publishers, etc., have not wised up yet.
Kunming discovers two more fake Apple stores
发布者Maybe Apple Corp. should open some real Apple stores in China? Sell their goodies at a reasonable price?
