"I get it that new high-rises is where the money's at, but where are people going to buy food if these markets are all torn down?"
Walmart! Because that's what they do in America! (The excuse for half the bad ideas in China.)
"I find Horsie's post insulting on so many levels. It reminds me of the classic "the non-believers have no morals" argument that religious people always use."
Not that you're any better, D.
Seahorse62, I find US born-agins annoying because I used to be one. But I got tired of being told "give your money to the preacher and G-d will make you rich," and "kill the commies (gooks, spics, rag-heads, etc.), G-d doesn't love them," and "if you were good, you'd be rich and healthy; since you're poor, you deserve to suffer" and the general long-term habit of baptizing slavery, racism, xenophobia, "American Adam" exceptionalism, and every other traditional vice. "If the name of G-d is cursed amongst the Gentiles, it is because of you," St. Paul said. He's still right.
Not that born-agin secularists/atheists in the US are any better.
Danmairen, I find US missionaries annoying, too, but be honest. The plague isn't religion but violent, pushy, people. It's not as if 20th century atheists/secularists don't have a record of wars and massacres, often of the hated religionists.

The beer is good. The food, OK, if you're dying for something Western. Food service is better in the daytime, mamahuhu in the night time.
I haven't stayed in their guesthouse, but I'll guess it's noisy in the night times.

Both Kunming branches are pleasant places to meet and chat with friends.
The food may not be the cheapest, but the cheapest would be from the street vendors.
I meet and drink coffee with friends at the Wen Lin PC several times weekly, especially since the Yun Joy Cafe is no more.
I've been drinking Beer Lao and coffee here, off and on for some years.
It's always a pleasant place to relax. The food is good as well. Close to cheap hotels and bike rental on Manting Lu, too.

发布者I miss the urban villages, with their unique businesses and human scale.
Rising food prices driving inflation across Yunnan
发布者That's what happens when you take a lot of farmland out of production. The food has to come from somewhere else and probably costs more.
Inside Kunming's 'dwarf empire'
发布者Everybody has to earn a living somehow and performing at Dwarf Empire probably beats some other things. Don't like it? Don't go.
