Forums > Study > Looking for the reviser aiyaryarr:
In my view, you are misleading our local friend when you, whom I guess to be a native speaker, state that ""to revise", which carry the connotation of "to re-write"". At which academic institution has your professors assumed revising meant rewriting? Also, let's note that revising may be pointers on what is erred that the writer himself can then fix.
Also, although I don't believe Spring catches it, your use of more extensive vocabulary and degrading prose is what I truly do not appreciate of English speakers. Asserting dominance in discussions through mastery of one's own language is disappointing. It is clear that Spring has basic grasp of English, yet you capitalize on your position and clearly choose to use a deprecating tone. And the follow up post of a more conciliatory stance is only a move to pretentious humility.
I've seen this a few times not only on web boards but in important joint meetings. The "I'm superior in some way to you" mindset of either party always has negative implications and hinders progress to the actual goal. Take this thread: if readers interpreted it correctly, Spring would have found and paid for a native speaker to revise his essay. Done. Instead it has become what it has become.
However, everyone has his or her bad days. It is just the more mature thing to be positive and helpful rather than arrogant and scornful.
Forums > Food & Drink > Restaurants you 'love to hate' I believe the gist here is that customers should articulate their complaints over the pricing and quality of products offered in Kunming. But in the big scheme of things, it may be healthy to take a look at what is going on at the macro level. Yunnan is a third tier province. People like yourselves are driving its development through a want of higher standards. However, it should be noted that these pressures will also affect factors such as pricing and mentality. The novelty of Kunming as a quaint town (with its flaws that are continually being chastised) will change with more opinions voiced, and we are already seeing that the majority are voicing their opinions — truly for the individuals betterment or not is the interesting outcome to watch for. Quality may increase but at what cost? Service may improve but for what customer segment? It really is interesting to chart Kunming's development.
Forums > Living in Kunming > advice for starting a business Just trying to take a step back a little here. I've met a few people who have wanted to start businesses, and all this business advice is great.
But, much more fundamentally I'd recommend you to find the reason why you want to start a business. Are you really interested? Sure? Then sleep on it and see if you're still interested. Then sleep on it some more and check again. Then do your research and planning. On the other hand, if you see a market opening explore it more. Never get trapped in a certain mind set. The market is volatile, but minds like to think singularly — this leads to a dangerous path of many challenges and failure.
Btw laotou, your use of hyphens is quite interesting. Quite abstract to read.
Forums > Living in Kunming > Who majored in Finance? I majored in mechanical engineering but now working with an investments firm (operations), hence the reason why I'm frequenting Kunming more these days. It's been a good experience so far, I've been able to meet with a few local sme's which has been interesting. Also had some time to chat up some foreigners and listen to their views on Kunming's development.

Getting Away: Inle Lake revisited
发布者Heading to Myanmar in the next few weeks and didn't know what to expect. This is a nice little teaser and introduction to the beautiful and quaint Myanmar people go to visit.
Chiang Mai's Chinese invasion
发布者Excellent article! Very informative piece on an obscure but snowballing impact of Chinese tourists on neighboring countries. Sure China has the most number of millionaires in the world but a slow growth in the middle class, who are also curious and travel hungry, will spark budget / mid level tourism. Thanks for the write up.
Deputy mayor answers 12345 hotline
发布者I believe the top boys in the Yunnan government are very progressive minded, perhaps stemming from links to the central government in Beijing. I'm glad to see not only development initiative but also outreach to the community.
Riding into Kunming's future
发布者Fun read, got to love the excitement and buzz over the new airport. I expect a lot more to come with Kunming's rapid development, as you guys have noted! I feel quite fortunate to be able to witness this transitioning period of a Chinese city.
