Forums > Living in Kunming > Risk for rooted phones in China

uhm, I'm pretty sure Microsoft, Google, and Apple are all NSA backers. They're companies based in the US; they don't really have a choice no matter what they say publicly.

If you root your phone the first thing is to change the root password. Also, the phone can still be set to check programs for their appropriate signing, etc. If you turn that off it's your own fault(well, besides buying a phone in China preloaded with NSA approved goodness ;)

Xunelei...haha, anyone who trusts pirating software that's not open source and downloaded from a trusted source is well, a fool...

Forums > Living in Kunming > Weather in December / Jan?

Heating generally doesn't work here since everything is concrete and there usually isn't any insulation at all. If it's an older building your windows will have a terrible draft too. Many residents will use saran wrap or something to seal most windows for the winter. It rarely gets "cold" but sitting inside at 35 degrees all afternoon redefines 35 degrees.

If i know I'll be in a room with a concrete floor then I wear long thick stockings and boots with thick soles. Then if I'm still feeling cold I use those electric hot bags with a cover to put your hands in.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Visa Renewal after Firing or Quitting

In the past it meant taking a visa run outside the country; however, with the new visa regulations who knows. The best way is if she can save face and make up some excuse as to why she needs to quit/go back home.

Of course that means being polite, and saying how sad she is to leave such a great school... .haha, which I could never do.

I'm pretty sure if she wants to change employers she needs a letter from her current employer stating she left on good terms.

Just go down to the entry-exit bureau and ask them. I find about 60% of the time they are friendly and helpful. If they aren't friendly they'll at least tell you straight up what she needs.

The traffic police will be the ones smoking in the corner and spitting.... while the cars will be parked down the center of the street, and cars going down the wrong way because they can't turn left due to said cars in the middle of the street.

Just saw it this week on a road just off of Beijing Lu.

Last time I checked heavy pollutants can't be "flushed" clean. The title should be related to this: "the effort is expected to provide Kunming with another source of water in times of drought as well as generate hydropower."

Cheese tasted great. Much better than other pizza joints.

Excellent salad bar. Hamburgers are usually ok. The fancier dishes were a little lacking.

Giving it a 4 stars for the salad bar. If you were going there for "fine dining" then probably best to go somewhere else.

The store also has some nice imported food(though obviously Metro is cheaper for some things). The freshly baked goods are nice too.

Seems to be pretty hit or miss. First time I went there the pizza and hamburgers were great. 2nd time the pizza was terrible, and the hamburger was ok. 3rd time the pizza was ok, but people were smoking inside by the time we left. Guess the no smoking policy is not enforced.

Not bad. Pretty much what you would expect, but expensive for China.

Expensive, but decent bread. Other places are better, but not bad if you're in a hurry.
