Here's a post about the veggie noodle/mixian/ersi place across from Yuantong Temple: www.gokunming.com/en/blog/item.php?blog_id=89
Also, there is an Indonesian/Chinese veggie restaurant not too far from the airport off of Minhang Lu:
Green Mountain Vegetarian Restaurant
高山青素食餐厅
7 Guanpei Lu, Guanshang
昆明关上关培路7号
Tel: 7185295
In general, it isn't easy being a vegetarian in Kunming, you just have to try explaining your situation to staff at a restaurant. If they get it, they're worth going back to... if they don't, you may want to look elsewhere. Good luck and please let us know if you discover any other veggie spots in Kunming. Thanks.

Cloudland is nice, but if you're looking for something a little closer to the Green Lake/University part of the city you might try the Yunnan University Hotel - I think it might be more like 180 yuan/night. Mingtong Hotel off of Beijing Lu is hard to find but it offers basic but very clean rooms with shared bath for 50/night. It's located just behind the Kunming Hotel. Yunnan University Hotel and other hotels are listed here: www.gokunming.com/en/listings/index.php?category_id=3

Don't know where the casinos are but there should still be some near Ruili, check this China Daily report: www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2007-04/17/content_851987.htm
'Foreign casinos along Chinese borders have either been forced to shut down or go underground because of crackdowns by police and their collaboration with foreign counterparts.
The number of such casinos has shrunk from 149 - many of them illegal - in 2005 to 28 now. Of those still in business, nine are in the southwestern border area with Myanmar and Vietnam and the remaining along the northern border with Russia, according to the Ministry of Public Security.
"We expect the number will continue to drop this year," Zhang Jun, a ministry official in charge of the fight against gambling, told China Daily.'

Happy ninth birthday Sal, you've made Kunming a better place.
Four stars for a great restaurant with friendly staff.
I give Tusheng Shiguan a fifth star for its goal of promoting environmentally sound food production.
My favorite Tengchong-style restaurant in Kunming. Their ersi and erkuai are trucked over from Tengchong and are the real deal — Kunming ersi and erkuai do not compare.
The restaurant itself is a bit jumbled, but there are a couple of tables outside in the courtyard that are nice to sit at when the weather's pleasant.
Don't believe them when they say they don't have lufu.
Tom and Jiajia have been baking up a storm lately. Thanks to them I have delicious sourdough bread to toast on the space heater in the office.
The Bircher muesli is probably the healthiest and most delicious breakfast around.
Pound for pound, one of the best little Western restaurants in China. 佳佳万岁!
Just had gnocchi in mushroom sauce and a glass of wine for dinner on the balcony in mid-January. Awesome.

Video: The Dangsters
发布者Regarding the 'offensive' portion of the soundtrack, it may make more sense or even be amusing to some if viewed in its original context, which happens to be the video for the song 'Windowlicker' by Aphex Twin:

I find it reassuring to see young people in Kunming actually following their dreams instead of doing what society is telling them to do. 加油!
