Just north of Green Lake at 44 Qingyun Jie there is a new dry/wet laundry called Bonnych (布兰奇), which despite the odd English name looks like the real deal, with dryers. I haven't checked prices, you can call them at 5157381. They also have a website: www.bonnych.com.

hi Kathryn,

you can do the Chengjiang/Fuxian trip in one day, no problem... probably best to hire a driver for the day - there is also a mountain (maotianshan/帽天山) just northeast of the lake that is famous for fossils... never been up the mountain so no idea if it's worth the extra bit of driving...

-- haven't been to the hot springs in anning, but i hear they're great, there is a direct bus from panjiawan/xiao ximen to the anning hot springs area for something like 10 yuan... dianchi spring spa on dianchi lu also has decent hot springs if you don't feel like leaving the city.

-- mile is a short bus ride away and has hot springs, wine and a big fat buddha statue, could be a good overnight trip

--haobao organic farm is clean and has amazing food, but not much to do after the sun goes down other than organic corn liquor and pakistani mtv

--jindian/golden temple is a decent place to spend some time and can be combined with food and drinks on the deck at moonlight corner's expo garden location afterward... easily one of the top places in kunming to watch the sun drop behind the mountains

--minigolf isn't very chinese, but hello haigeng can be a fun place to spend an afternoon with friends

--a day trip to chengjiang/fuxian hu could be good fun, the water there is clean and clear and can be swum in... might be quite cold at this time of year, but there's lots of good food and beds in the little hotels encircling the lake start as low as 15 yuan/person

i hope that helps,

chris

Congratulations to Karen Song, the first to reply that Geoffrey Chaucer was the medieval poet credited with linking St Valentine's Day with romance.

Stay on the lookout for more giveaways on GoKunming in the near future!

I can't help but agree with EK Kadiddlehopper. An efficient regional rail network would be good for many of the people in China/SE Asia/South Asia who have yet to see the benefits of their respective countries' recent opening up.

Oddly, this train may be one of Kunming's better places for a picnic. Inspired by Quester, I rode it again this afternoon with a friend, who brought a nice wine and some freshly baked bread. We hung out on the sunny side of the train with the windows open and shot the breeze as the empty Chinese New Year version of Kunming rolled by... good fun.

Four stars for a great restaurant with friendly staff.

I give Tusheng Shiguan a fifth star for its goal of promoting environmentally sound food production.

My favorite Tengchong-style restaurant in Kunming. Their ersi and erkuai are trucked over from Tengchong and are the real deal — Kunming ersi and erkuai do not compare.

The restaurant itself is a bit jumbled, but there are a couple of tables outside in the courtyard that are nice to sit at when the weather's pleasant.

Don't believe them when they say they don't have lufu.

Tom and Jiajia have been baking up a storm lately. Thanks to them I have delicious sourdough bread to toast on the space heater in the office.

The Bircher muesli is probably the healthiest and most delicious breakfast around.

Pound for pound, one of the best little Western restaurants in China. 佳佳万岁

Just had gnocchi in mushroom sauce and a glass of wine for dinner on the balcony in mid-January. Awesome.
