Forums > Living in Kunming > Beamer needed for film project for village kids

Do you live in Kunming and have a beamer/projector? We need your help...

I work in an art house cinema in the Netherlands where I program educational film. My wife is from rural Dongchuan and next month we are planning to go to the village to spend CNY with the family. We are aware of the fact that nowadays Chinese kids spend hours and hours on the phone during the holidays, especially when the parents are feasting. What I want to do is to set up a proper cinema for the kids for 1 or 2 nights so that they have quality entertainment with nice films that are suitable for them. I've already arranged everything with the film distributors, so I can fill up a really interesting film program. But because we don't live in Kunming nowadays we have to reach out to the community to borrow a beamer and a screen so we can take this to the village and set everything up. Is there anyone willing to support our project in this way? I think it could really make a difference for these kids 😊

Think what? That guns are good?

I agree with misfit that capital punishment is not gonna solve this problem. It's an emotional response that will not change anything about the situation.

I went to the Just Hotel pool yesterday and it was a total disgrace, the place looked like it hadn't been cleaned for at least a few months. Ugly, strange building with big rusty poles, unfriendly service. They updated their price to 40 rmb. The lifeguard was smoking at the waterside with a few of his lazy companions. They advertise that they close at 21:00 but the clock inside the pool is 15 minutes fast and they had us out of the pool 25 minutes before closing time. Not a nice way to spend 40 rmb. The only positive side was that it was not very crowded and it was easy to swim fast in a lane only bumping into a few clueless zig-zagging old people or kids once or twice. Any new tips on good pools in Kunming?

What I know of: 世纪金源大酒店 has a spa with 2 nice pools, indoor and outdoor, indoor 25m, outdoor slightly bigger, fitness area, not too crowded if you are smart with the times. Relatively clean. 168 for the whole spa package, pretty nice!

金星小区 in the north has a 50 meter outside pool, 20rmb, crowded but big and relatively clean, nice atmosphere.

世博花园酒店 has a 25 meter pool, not heated, clean-like, most old people don't take a shower before they get in, i complained many times. 30/40rmb

A pool at the far north side of Beijing lu, never went because it's 100 rmb. The bath is 50 meters, clean and deserted.

Tuodong I haven't been to for a few years. Crowded, expensive and not that clean was my impression.

I like going to the one at the youth center at Dianchi lu, relatively clean, not too crowded, 20 rmb...

Yes that is what i meant, mostly superficial or non existant. Which I think is pretty negative. In Luang Prabang it is so apparent that a majority of the locals are totally fed up with many of the foreigners that visit the town.

This place is without doubt my favorite restaurant in Kunming. It is truly Simao-style, but adds its own unique touch. The ingredients vary per week and the ingredients are all carefully sourced in specific markets or brought straight from the mountains. Their wild vegetables are always sweeter than other places in Kunming. There are plaques on the wall that say: "we don't feel the need to enhance the flavor with weijing or jijing, we do our best to source the best natural foods for you". You will not see any grease after finishing the plate, not even with the deep fried dishes. They are very flexible with ordering combinations and the super-friendly owner-chef will be happy to step out of the kitchen and give you some great advice. If he has time, because this place is crowded on most evenings. Service is friendly and attentive (but it is still Kunming). You get free home-made kimchi and apple vinegar with all meals. They have cold Fenghuaxueyue beer. Without doubt a safe Chinese eatery, really delicious food, friendly people who are passionate about their product. A true gem, in my opinion.

I heard Richland Hospital has proper testing material.

I think the medical staff is of the same level as other Kunming healthcare facilities. I needed to translate some specifics of a medical report I got in another specialized hospital. I wanted to do this by letting the Richland doctor have a phone call with the specialized doctor that had done the tests. I came in and there sat a young physician with a translating nurse. When the phone call to the other hospital wasn't successful he wanted to have look at the report himself. I asked if that would make sense if he wasn't a doctor that was specialized in that specific field. He told me he wanted to have a look anyway. To my horror, he promptly misdiagnosed me with a truly appalling disease. When I came home I was puzzled. I didn't have any symptoms, how could I have something that serious. I checked the internet and found out that the condition that he described DIDN'T EVEN EXIST. Well, I have to give him, he had me stressing out there for a minute. I wanted to confront him with his mistake but apparently all the doctors had taken the weekend off. Eventually, in combination with my visit to the other state run facility, I was in constant uncertainty and stress over the period of 4 days for something that turned to be NOTHING. I had NOTHING.

Please use the highest level of common sense in dealing with local healthcare. The situation is grim. Best to let them test (if the facilities are ok) and make conclusions and decisions by yourself, if serious ask a physician in another country. Never blindly trust anything they say.

Really friendly people, very tasty proper Indian food, all made with fresh ingredients and very reasonably priced.

For sure the best Indian food in town!
