I am an earthquake virgin so please be gentle. Anyway,, on the 26th at 2.20 am I experienced my first earthquake here in Kunming. It wasn't a big deal I guess but I could clearly feel the building move and I saw lose hanging objects swing around. My neighbours ran downstairs but the whole thing only lasted about 10 seconds. Did anyone else notice it?
When in Rome,,, I suggest you start talking even louder, wave your arms around a lot and make sure to reveal the plot and/or how good/bad this movie really is. Maybe they'll get the point or maybe you'll get a fat lip,, only one way to be sure.
I watched a good movie aboard the airplane some months ago. It was called "The Park" in English but I've got no idea about the Chinese title. It is about the clash of generations. The older people meet in a park to find a suitable match for their children who they fear cannot find their way in modern China. A touching and thought provoking movie.
Hello,, I am arriving in Kunming to work in the Julong building on Ren Min Zhong Lu Sunday the 5th of October. What would be a good approach to finding myself an apartment withint 10-15 mins of walking distance? Should I contact an agent? hire a translater and look around on my own? use classifieds or websites? (bad experiences last time). I guess checking in at a hotel for a couple of days while considering my options is a good start. What would you think is a reasonable price if I want a 1 bedroom (livingroom & bedroom), western standard, broadband internet and furnished place? Any advice is greatly appreciated :),, it's always quite confusing moving to a new country.
I'm not sure what water they use for watering all the green stuff but every time I see them doing it at high noon at 30 degrees I always wonder if no one's ever told them to do it in the evening or night when 3 fourths of it doesn't evaporate. Just one of many issues of which Mao was one of them (without going into details).
I refuse to believe those numbers are correct. The real CPI is higher and if I should take a guess based on my own observations I'd say the number is closer to 8-9 percent. By the way, did anyone else notice if the price of meat is a lot higher outside of Kunming? Where I have been lately travelling in western Yunnan the prices are roughly 20-25 percent higher.
Oh yeah,, the recipes are back! (damn, Ian beat me to it. Oh well, it deserves double recognition). Some of the recipes from 2008/2009 are still some of my favourite Chinese dishes. More please.
Went there yesterday and it totally made my week. Nice decor and friendly staff and a real salad bar. Sadly we both wanted mexican food so I can't really say much about their other courses. The food was great but just a tad spicier would have improved the dish. The best thing was that we almost had the place to ourselves and we could have a quiet conversation without shouting, spitting Chinese people in the background. I realised how much I had missed that since coming here.
We went to Chicago Coffee a couple of days ago and it was a nice experience. The place is cozy with soft comfy chairs (I realized how much I have missed one since coming here) and they have a nice little collection of English language books in the corner consisting mainly of classics and travel litterature. I was looking forward to trying their advertized tortilla bar but it wasn't up and running that evening.
Instead we went for 2 12 inch pizzas -roast chicken and pepperoni- but we quickly realized that 1 would have been enough. Those things are heavy. I am mainly into Italian style pizza but Chicago's double layered pizzas are well worth a try. Their coffee seems to be a bit on the expensive side but people say good things about it and they have got a nice selection. I wouldn't mind dropping by again some day,, hopefully when they've got the tortilla thing going. English speaking staff btw.
