Forums > Living in Kunming > Metro Membership

I recently made my metro card a few months back. All i had to do was hand them my passport, fill out some details like current address and contact number.

Was told to go in and choose my stuff first and collect my card before checkout. I did a quick run for some butter, cheese, imported biscuits (local biscuits are lousy), some coffee and frozen pizza.

Didn't spend more than 15 minutes choosing my stuff, went back to the front counter and my card was ready :)

So, yeah, passport is all that is needed.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Tailor-made suit in Kunming?

Hi Andrew,

In my personal experience, I had to make a custom tailor suit (ever notice China men's shoulders are so tiny!) for my china wedding a few months back, and my wife being local, scouted and asked ALL of her friends abt good tailors here.

The sad answer is, no. there isn't any good ones here. their prices aren't worth the quality you get back in return. (as a proverb in Chinese 一分钱一分货 = you get what you pay for)

My humble advice, should you wish to accept it, is to go to HK and make a suit, which is much better. a RMB 2500 suit made there is way more better than a RMB 2500 suit here. Or if HK is too far, Chengdu also has good tailors. My wife's friend's husband made his suit there, albeit slightly a bit more expensive than HK, but also good. He made his at a street of tailors near the UK visa centre. If you want, I can get the name of the street and tailor's name/contact details.

Or, you can make a holiday and fly to Bangkok and make it there as well! :)

Short answer, sorry, no.

Forums > Food & Drink > where to buy good red wine

i actually have a friend here who imports red wine from France and Chile.

he just started the business and is still looking for distributors to take some of his stock.

if any of you are interested, i would be more than happy to pass his contact number to you so you may enquire more abt them.

however, these being imported wine, the price tag's usually higher than local red wines with all the taxes and all. last time he gave me a bottle from France, cant remember the brand though, but it was just under 200RMB but its taste was excellent~

have yet to find any local red wines that i like... will keep trying :)

Forums > Living in Kunming > Kunming Tap Water

i for one nvr believed in drinking the tap water here. be it boiled or even for making soup or dishes.

for 10 yuan per huge mineral bottle water, i dont mind playing it safe.

jz my 2 cents.

@tigertiger,

" If it isn't the water it is the drivers.
If it isn't the drivers it is the lack of paramedics.
If the hospital doesn't kill me then some virus could see me off. "

how true indeed.... loved the drivers part the most :)
