Martial Arts in Kunming

SFbayarea (5 posts) • 0

Hi everyone,

I'm in Kunming until June to study Mandarin and would also like to learn a martial art. What different kinds can be found in Kunming and where are they located? I have already looked up a few on the internet and GoKunming, but many seem to be out of business now.

Thanks!

Hey SFbayarea; go to Wen Miao (98 Renmin Zhong Lu); Judo, Jiu Jitsu (7 days per week; Tuesday, Thursday 7.30-9.30pm, Sat & Sun 2.30 - 5.30pm, then 7.30-9.30pm (Sat only), and Monday, Wednesday, Friday in North Kunming.
Wu Shu, Tai Qi, Taekwondo, Aikido. There is also Karate not far from Wen Miao either.

Thanks for the posts, Chicha78 and Ifoundthetuna.

I went to Wen Miao today and they only have Judo there now. The jiu Jitsu moved out, but the Judo teacher said they should be nearby.. I was also informed that there is no good/professional taekwondo teachers in Kunming.

I am currently interested in Taekwondo, Jiu Jitsu, and Muay Thai, but if there are no good places, then I will look into Wang Shifu.

Anyone have opinions about Shaolin Kungfu in Guandu Old Town?

Hi

I study with Huang Shifu at the park in on Renmin Zhong lu with the pagoda looking government building. Sorry I do not know the name.

He is probably the best in Kunming. He teaches there for free on Saturdays and Sundays. Sat lessons are 3-4 hours and Sun lessons are about 7 hours. That's an insane amount of training for free IMHO.

He can teach you tai chi, xingyi, or bagua. You can also start learning push hands immediately. Any teacher that says otherwise raises a red flag with me. He speaks a little english and his teaching style is very much like how a westerner would teach.

His teacher was Chen Shi Tong, so his lineage is legit. I also want to mention that he recently did a seminar for the Chinese Army. I believe that he is also opening a school soon.

You can call me @ 15587200953

Or just come and check it out for yourself one weekend.

@AndrewD
Sounds like a good deal! What time do lessons start on Saturday and Sunday? Does he have many students?

WenMiao has a state Taekwondo champion there. Also the Judo teacher is an All-China champion plus an ex-Olympian also trains there. I do not know if that is what you are looking for in the way of good teachers. Also BJJ=Basically Just Judo, ne waza. Respect for BJJ but that's just what it is.

WenMiao has a state Taekwondo champion there (Xin). Also the Judo teacher is an All-China champion plus an ex-Olympian also trains there. Most other guys who train there are MMA Karate, Jiu Jitsu, etc. I do not know if that is what you are looking for in the way of good teachers. Judo is hard core and you get throw so better do some kung fu etc., kicking air as it is lighter on the body.
