We just moved into an apartment on kunming and need to set up wifi. Does anyone have any advice on how to do this without speaking Chinese?

you need to get an ADSL connection from a company like China Telecom if yoir apartment doesnt have one already, ask your landlord to help. Then buy a wifi router online or at 121 street.
