Chili's and Applebees, now we're talking! Though it seems that you, mmkunmingteacher, are making a big leap from the reality that some of us enjoy Western food to the unreasonable conclusion that we don't love China, the people here, and the culture here (or that we would want an American City of God here). Just because our tastebuds still enjoy the style of food we grew up eating, doesn't mean we don't love China.
On that note, gonna enjoy my breakfast bowl of rice noodles and my BK lunch tomorrow :) I might even hit up starbucks in the afternoon and top it all off with shao kao late tomorrow night.
There's still a long way to go before it looks like this: www.imagebam.com/image/8a8177309479404
I don't think the Chinese would reasonably expect Westerners to forsake Western food after moving to China. After all, have you seen the Chinese who live in the West? Some of them cannot stomach Western food. Do they feel they have to prove how much they love Western food? Or how much they love living in the West?
Why should anyone feel they have to prove anything like that? How about people just enjoy food and enjoy life.
I've talked with Chinese people (both Kunming natives and from other regions) who told me they missed the food they grew up with even when they went to another part of China. It's not so surprising that we can enjoy whatever is local but still want the (at least) occasional meal of what we grew up with.
I said that tongue in cheek, for the record.
