Mac book repair?

mamadavid (16 posts) • 0

After becoming very unstable - slow, freezing, pinwheel of death - my MacBook pro now doesn't start up: shuts down of its own accord soon after grey apple logo and progress wheel appear. Have done PRAM reset and the other one - hold down ctrl-alt-shift while powering on, then reboot — but still can't get it started. Have no disks and booting in safe mode was unsuccessful...so - is there anywhere in kunming I can take it to get it fixed or at least looked at? Further research suggests the logic board may be damaged and need replacing. Any trustworthy Mac technicians in kunming? I know there's a shop at nanya selling genuine apple products but it's not an authorized dealer so may not do repairs. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Blobbles is correct... but yeah, the place in Golden Eagle mall off Renmin Zhonglu / Qiangnian Lu is apple certified to do repairs. Just dont go into the shop itself, go next do to the wood paneled room behind it (next to Starbucks).

For the specific mac problem, have you booted the laptop into the recovery utility (Alt R or something like that, cannot remember). From there you can run some utilities that scan the disk to see if its a corrupted hard-drive. Had a similar problem awhile ago and was able to find out that the SSD inside had gone bad, then used a third-party utility to fix the drive's directory. If that doesnt show any errors (or even boot up) then its probably a logic board issue, though there are many other possibilities.

Sidenote: if the logic board is reallllyyy fried it shouldnt even be loading as far as you say. Possible, but unlikely.

Try holding down the ALT key when rebooting (after you hear the blong sound, press the ALT key until you see a menu of bootable disks).

Try booting from the original boot disk and re-install your OS - which will obliterate everything on the original disk - but since you can't get to it...

If you have firewire - you MIGHT be able to back up all your files by slaving from someone else's firewire enabled computer (a good idea) and THEN wipe the drive and start again.

Other things that can frag your laptop - automatic system updates that were corrupted or interrupted (or were just released with bugs), installing new software/utilites, etc...and not enough RAM (newer OS requires 4GB minimum just to operate without bottle-necking).

Good luck with the mac repair places - there's a couple on and around 121 street - but no warranty repairs as far as I know.

I took my computer to this place after having similar problems about three months ago. Still under warranty so all repairs and labor were free. They speak English as well. Very professional.
