Schools that hire non-native speakers.

I have a friend who will be arriving in two weeks. He is from the Philippines and has been teaching for three years in Hebei.

He was promised a job here in KM, so he decided not to renew his contract and come here. Now he has been told by the school that they can't hire him as he is a non native speaker...

Does anyone know of any schools that hire non native English teachers? He has a degree, though not in teaching, and has experience.
Any info is appreciated.
Thanks!

I have a friend from the Philippines who has already been hired somewhere, but I don't know where. I just sent him a note to ask and will reply here when I find out.

The latest trend seems to be for schools to actively seek out non-native English speakers so they can pay them less.

Being a native speaker is now a requirement for the work visa. Should you agree to work without a visa, however...
Also, many Filipinos can claim to be native English speakers. As i understand it, Tagalog and English are both spoken from birth, depending on where exactly you are born in the islands.

Just as having a bachelors was always a requirement.. I managed to get a legal working visa in Hebei without one however. I thought it all depended on Guanxi?

Schools also hire non-native speakers as subject teachers. There is no requirement for Math teachers to be native speakers to get a work permit.

Most foreign language teachers that i know aren't native speakers, but look the part. What is holding your friend back might not be his English level, qualifications or ability to teach.

I would probably have him make a phone interview first, and when the school sounds enthusiastic, go there in person to surprise them with his looks.
