Desperate for Vietnamese Food

Shyam (244 posts) • 0

Hey Folks!

Please tell me that there's a Vietnamese restaurant in Kunming. Vietnamese is probably my single favorite ethnic cuisine back home. Winter or summer, I have a bowl of pho at least twice a week and I usually end up taking ban mi sandwiches back home with me. I would donate a kidney for some grilled beef in grape leaves, or even some authentic Vietnamese spring rolls.

I realize that we're only 341 miles from Hanoi, but I also know that there were some historic tensions between the Chinese and Vietnamese in recent history. (Please say this hasn't overflowed into Yunnan eating habits.)

I don't understand why it's so bloody difficult to find Vietnamese and Thai food in China. Western countries are flooded with this stuff, despite being on the other side of the earth. You'd figure a little bit might spill across the border....kind of like how the Southern part of the US is now owned by Mexico.

there's no market for it. most chinese people could care less about experimenting with foods from different countries.

@Magnifico, i think it's more about experimenting with foods from other Asian countries. They are often keen on trying Western food, but in no way want to admit that Japanese or Thai dishes might taste better than theirs.

@Shyam, why not make a short 1-2-day stop in Vietnam on your next business trip (possibly not during Chinese New Year)? It's so damn close to where we are in China, and you get to eat authentic Vietnamese cuisine!

THANK YOU...THANK YOU...THANK YOU...everyone!

I'll do the recon on the Vietnamese canguan near Star Flag, mPRin...and let you guys know.

It's really too bad that there isn't more Vietnamese food around here. I think the Chinese would like it.

Thanks for the advice, Yankee. A trip to Vietnam has been in my plans for the past 25 years. When I came to Yunnan, I had no clue I'd be so close to it. In fact, I don't think I could have been in a better spot, since one of my big passions is military history. I understand that we're relatively close to Dien Bin Phu (which is widely considered to be one of the greatest land battles in the second half of the 20th century). My biggest decision is to go by myself, or to try to go as part of a group.

My wife pointed out what she said was a vietnamese restaurant in the Harmonious Century complex. Harmonious are tall brown buildings just east of north bus station. It is near the KFC. Behind the tall twin towers under construction. Sorry but did not catch name of place.
