Yunnan Normal University application help

whereisshy (9 posts) • 0

Hello,

I've been cyber-stalking this site for some time and am looking to make the move for the Spring semester at Yunnan Normal University. At risk of repeating a thread, I would like to know if there are any current recommendations for applying? Is CUCAS's site legit and worth my while?

Can you just apply directly to Yunnan Normal? I applied directly to Kunming University of Science and Technology with no problems.

I applied through this site laihua. csc. edu. cn and I'm a student in Kunming now. Give it a try :) or contact Shifan directly.

Okäse, I think we're in! Online application is away. Any idea how long this process takes electronically? What are my alternatives, given it is so close to the final date of application for the spring 2014 semester? If I just show up in Kunming in mid-February am I going to be able to find a learning provider?

You'll be able to find a learning provider whenever you show up to be honest. Some friends arrived after semester had started in September and had no problems enrolling at my Uni. Failing that, try one of the many private schools.

Hello everyone

I was looking at Wikipedia's section on Yunnan Normal and saw this...

"Beginners take four years to complete the study and those who have studied Chinese for some time are allowed to shorten their study period accordingly".

I have been studying in Sichuan for nearly a year now. Im very interested in Yunnan so does anyone know any specifics about this? Like if I have HSK 4 can I skip the first year and go directly into second year? What about HSK 5 or 6? What about self-study with no formal qualifications?

Does anyone know of other unis that follow this approach? A long time back I saw that Dalian Institute Foreign Languages did this but I cannot for the life of me find anything about this online now.

Thx for any info/input!

Happy Xmas and New Year to everyone!

I graduated from YNNU in '07, so old information here, but at that time, if you were planning to do their 4-year program, as long as you had passed your HSK 6 by the time you graduated you were fine.

There 'might' be a possibility of testing out of some basic Chinese classes, but you might want to talk about this with your school in Sichuan. They could be able to help you inquire about this at YNNU, arranging a formal/informal transfer of credit, etc.

Daithi, I'm sure many things have changed in many ways since I was there, but I'm guessing the basic model has remained the same. Personally, I studied in small, non-credit classes for 2+ years and benefited greatly from the generally interactive classes. I then tested into the 3rd year of their for-credit four-year BA program. The two years I spent in the for-credit program were rather boring -think very traditional lecture type classes five days a week. The upside of this was being forced to learn to write 'much' more Chinese.

Due to the intensive focus on reading, writing and listening to lectures, the degree program actually diminished my oral Chinese level while improving the other 3 skills (due to lots of input (lectures) and almost no output). I was in a class with a Business/Finance focus (as opposed to classical Chinese) so I also gained some vocabulary/knowledge in this area. But that was just my experience, everyone's experience is different.
