I don't like gyms very much. Prefer doing my own home workouts. And I love using Kettlebells. Does anyone know if there's a place in Kunming where you can buy them ?

Loads of sports shops around the Stadium on DongFengDong Lu, East of BaiTaLu. In stadium perimeter and on DFD Lu.
I have seen them in Metro but only one size remaining last time I went.

I ordered some for a friend last year off of taobao.

I have seen them new and 2nd hand in several weight classes 6-20kg at the secondhand market zhangguanying. The market is right at the 2nd ring on Puji road - get off bus 1 at the stop Yunnan Jiaotong College, cross the road and go down any alleyway (they all lead to the market). You can get anything there.

On this topic, are there a fair amount of gyms in the city? If so, what does a typical membership cost?

Just had a look but couldn't find any at zhangguanying market. I'd ask for more info but I suspect that asking 'which shop?' about that place is pretty pointless. Perhaps taobao is the way to go. Anyone know the hanzi for 'kettlebell'?
