Where can I buy Yunnan goat cheese? Before coming here, I was under the impression that it was readily available at street markets etc.

I have seen it in Carrefour, but it is almost the same price as imported cheese. I thought as it was made locally it would be cheaper. Where can I get it cheap?

It's not cheap or readily available. Walmart carries it also, maybe cheaper than C4, but not by much.

Tofu and tofu like products are cheap and in the markets. Try those out. The tofu skin (yellow strands) is very good in dishes.

in beijing, there was a locally made cheese at carrefour that was really cheap and decent.

i was surprised at how expensive the local goat cheese is at carrefour.

there was a market stall set up once that had local goat cheese. it was much cheaper than carrefour. maybe 20 kuai for a fairly big block. but i've only ever seen them once.

For some reason, things that are appreciated in the West but can be easily done in China are tagged with Western prices, like cheese and coffee.

I've usually seen sellers in alleys or villages around town. They are often on carts or bikes, so they might move a lot.

The market on Hong Shan Nan Lu has it at about 70 kuai a kg. It's at the entrance, on the left above the grinning goat's head, below it's leg and next to it's liver. Fortunately the goat's cheese arrives sealed in big vacuum packs. Still a lot cheaper than imported cheese.

A lot of markets carry it and for 20 RMB I get a chunk that lasts me the entire week. Mine, unlike Barbara's, didn't come sealed though.

Aside from the market on 红山南, the markets at 北京路×圆通街 and in the art district off 滇缅大道 are places where I've most definitely seen it. Also would be surprised if it can't be found in the market on 螺蜂街×华山东路.

It's traditionally made from goat milk, but I suspect most or all of what we consume is made from cow milk. My evidence: though delicious, it does not taste like goat milk.

I have never been to a fresh market WITHOUT one or more goat cheese sellers. Avoid Carrefour et al. Go fresh. There are several fresh markets in Kunming, all of which sell fresh, locally-made goat cheese. I am surprised no one has seen this!

@DanTheMan, if they sell the cheese that is used to make Rushan (cow milk) in blocks, it might just look like fresh Rubing.
