Some Western countries have gone through periods of dealing with racism, which were even painful in some ways, such as the civil rights movement in US, apartheid in South Africa, so now some are quite sensitive to it. But of course China's history has been different, not having had those same types of experiences. China has of course had its own painful periods, dealing with different types of issues, so Chinese people might be sensitive about different types of things. In cross cultural situations, it would be best if both sides can be aware of what the other is sensitive to.

Some ads on Gokunming that schools place ask for a 'photo' or 'picture' along with the resumes so that they can put your resume in the recycling bin if you don't fit 'the look' they want. That's one way they avoid the awkward explanation about how you look.

I agree that photos is a sensitive issue, but also in the western world almost every resume nowadays goes with a photo...maybe soon with a facebook account??

In Beijing or Shanghai this racism would not be tolerated. But in Kunming, it's another story!""

not true...Cant really speak to Shanghai as i have only been there for fun. But, Beijing is brimming with racism! Its directed at everyone, Chinese not from Beijing, Black, white, anyone not from Beijing, basically...everything from Africans not being able to get taxis, to getting mob beat because you are white and with a local girl...Lucky for me i have not had too many bad experiences personally! Other then some old ladies calling me a white devil and to go back where i came from .hahah ...But i have heard and seen many many stories from friends. I think a main difference between here and Beijing...is a lot of locals here are pretty ignorant..in Beijing add elitism to the ignorance.

True, it also happens in Beijing with everyone not local, and it's probably even worse there because of the local chauvinism. And according to my Blacks friends, it also happens in Shanghai. It's every day a challenge for the majority of them to go out of the house, especially for girls. Imagine how would you feel if instead of getting a jovial "ha lou", blank stares, or having pictures taken with a smiling or amazed facial expression on them, you would get endless "so dark", "so ugly" or disgusted facial expressions from strangers directed at you.... every single day.

I meant that racism wouldn't be tolerated in an ad, not racism in general wouldn't be tolerated.

China IS rampant with racism in all forms, against EVERY member of society for one reason or another; because you're a foreigner, or black, or white, or have red hair or blonde hair, or too tall or too short, or too fat, or you're a woman, or you're a Muslim or because you're from another province, or your handicapped or disabled, etc, etc. the list is long.
