XiaGuan, Best place to live?

EncryptedEncrypted (114 posts) • 0

Hi,

Anyone that lives or have been living in Dali Xiaguan can recommend a good area? I'll be moving to Xiaguan (I can't find a good place to live in Old Town) but I don't know the city. I'll be going the next few days checking apartments.

I'm looking for a small kind of new apartment with one bedroom, kitchen, good internet.

Thanks!

There are a number of new developments just outside the old town, off the top road. At least one has holiday studio flats, some of which may be for rent. Sorry cannot remember the exact location or name.

Try going into the Jade Emu Guesthouse, just outside the city wall. It is owned/run by an Australian expat, he may be able to give you info that only a resident can.

@alexxm
At 2000/month. That is a lot in Dali. That is about 50% of a teachers pay, more than 50% for some. If you work in a bar, that it more than you earn, even as a big nose. You might get that for short term rents in Dali, but not long term. I can stay in a nice family hotel with views for less than that, and get clean sheets etc.

The problem isn't necessarily that rents in Dali are too high but that the salary of an English teacher here is pathetically low. 2000rmb/month seems to be the going rate for anything decent (ie clean and modern) in China these days....especially if it's furnished.

But you are correct. You can indeed get a room in a guesthouse for roughly 2000/month at preset.

I'm not sure what alexxm's flat is all about, but generally the new developments near Dali university are pretty nice if you want to live in old town.

I was staying in a guest house in Dali, just outside the wall, in July. 50/night.
My usual place which is much nicer was 60/n. This has double room, table, en-suite, and outside the room is a balcony/walkway with views of the lake.

Long term rent could be negotiated down.

Rent a few KM outside the city is much cheaper, but places harder to find. There is a lot of empty prop around Dali.
