I have found a few camping stores in Kunming but would like to know where else there may be some.
I'm looking for:
- camping stove
- stove fuel
- a tent
- blood clotting powder/gauze
I know of:
- Hardstone on Jianshelu
- the one around the corner from Salvador's with the gigantic backpack
- another unnamed one on Beimenlu near Yunnan University
- a small one in the bird and flower market in the building with all the fish tanks and fishing gear stores
Any others?
Thanks.
Luosiwan.
Over on the right hand end of the complex, on first or second floor is a section for outdoor sports.
If you are going to be away on a long journey, I think you will be looking for a propane bottle and gas burners. You may not find these in a camping store. They will however be much more cost effective.
The problem with the small gas cannisters is finding them in other cities.
Bloodclot powder YunnanBaiYao (云南白药) powder.
@tigertiger I definitely would prefer a burner with a small propane bottle, I guess I was not sure what size I'd be able to find.
The "small" propane tanks I've seen are maybe a 12-16 inches long and 8 inches in diameter. Is that what you're thinking of? Do you know where you can buy / rent those?
Thanks re. the bloodclot.
@tigertiger is this the luosiwan you mean? goo.gl/maps/WRc4V
Here is my updated list of camping gear I need:
- stove/burner with gas/propane
- inflatable mattress (with electric pump?) - not a thermarest, an actual inflatable mattress that is at least 4 inches thick. It's for putting in the back of the car.
- tent with a rainfly and ground cover
- hanging shower (a bag with a simple shower head on a hose)
- small camping chairs (I've seen these in the fishing stores at the bird and flower market)
- shovel/spade (seen some at bird and flower market)
- some kind of shower curtain around a hoop for some privacy? Maybe I can fashion one out of those circular hanging laundry clip things.
- bloodclotting gauze (I know where to get this)
Any other suggestions? We already have our survival gear.
Propane, available in your neighborhood probably.
You will see motorbikes delivering these. Flag one down and ask for a business card (ming pian). Or you will see these used in many small chow restaurants. Ask then where they get them from.
You will need to 'buy' the empty bottle, plus the cost of gas, and you will be able to exchange these as you travel for full ones. but you will get the money back on returning it.
Other camping gear
Inflatable mattress and pumps
Have both in Metro.
Tents
Metro has these (inner net/ground sheet sewn in)
Carrefour
LuoSiWan (LW)
Camping chairs
Metro has a reasonable selection of these (at the moment), and standard folding chairs.
Shower curtains (standard domestic), and rings. Metro/Carrefour/Walmart/B&Q
You can use standard plastic pipe and pipebends to rig a shower rail that will fit on your roofrack of car in B&Q. You may or may not wish to use glue.
Shower bag?
Dunno, I have only ever seen crap ones. You are probably better off making your own out of a plastic jerry can and hose, or strip wash using a bowl, soap, flannel, and a bucket.
Seriously, once you get the hang of it, a stip wash is very effective, probably better than a poor shower. And you don't need to get naked, a big plus if you cannot get privacy.
Shovels and other bits you may also find at the second hand market (they also sell lots of new), but no guarantees of quality, or that you would not pay much less elsewhere.

There's another camping store which historically has been overpriced but supposedly is running significant discounts due to being bricked-in by construction. It's on the south side of Renmin lu between the gate of the medical university and the west 1st ring road. Their selection may be down now but they've had quite a variety of camping gear in the past.
To find it you'll have to walk between the blue wall and the brick wall. Hopefully the later is not completed otherwise you'll be out of luck and the store will probably be closed! :-P
The best hiking store in town is Mei Li Outdoor Sports. They have everything you need. Its all name brand top quality stuff, so its not cheap. Its between Qing Nian Lu and the XinXiNan Shopping Mall on Huguo Lu. Its pretty large and the sign is written in English and Chinese. They definitely have propane and stoves. The shop on Beimen Lu also has propane and stoves and that place is cheaper. Why not go there? I bought my tent there, too.
