Giving birth in Kunming

My wife delivered at Fuyongshi Hospital, a public hospital, just next to the Green Lake Hotel on Qing Yun Jie. Although the staff and doctors are competent, they have horrible bedside manner (e.g., yelling at patients) and the other patients/families in the hospital can sometimes be inconsiderate, rude, and agressive. I don't recommend it. I would say, though, that I respect the doctors/nurses who work there because they have to deal with so many patients and so much rudeness (which in turn, makes them rude). We started at Kunming Number One Hospital/Yunnan University Hospital, but it's even more crowded there. I have heard good things about Maria and we did visit there once. The only problem about Maria is that it is a private hospital which supposedly means they hire retired doctors and do not have the latest in facilities. If the delivery has no complications, then a private hospital like Maria has much better customer service and you may be able to be in the delivery room if you are a foreigner (no husbands allowed at the delivery is the usual rule in China). However, if there are problems, they may have you transferred to a public hospital in the end as they may not be able to handle every type of procedure (so I've heard). Many people go to Hong Kong or Chiang Mai to deliver if they can afford it.

I believe what Quester meant to say with all that killing babies talk is "unwanted embryos without consciousness". I'm not a huge fan of how a number of Chinese see abortion either, but that Holier-than-thou, American missionary crap ought to be kept confined to the backwaters of the "real" America.

They drown fully delivered unwanted embryos without consciousness in buckets.
Other than that, I'm sure they have a strictly enforced ban on late term abortions.
So no worries about doctors !

Wow, Danmairen presumes to know so many things about me, even my nationality, and then speculates on what my comments mean, and then proceeds to describe this speculated presumed opinion as "crap"! People now get insulted here not just for what they say, but for what they haven't said!

You obviously have little interest in anyone else's opinion, but since you are not a "fan" what is your opinion about the Chinese view of abortion? Is that about the late term abortions that Heniu mentioned, or something more?

Thank you all for your replies, a lot of useful information gathered. I have one more question if anyone knows; what about giving birth at the general military hospital on Da Guan lu ( not 100% sure if the road's name is correct )?

And please guys, no need to argue!Hearing different opinions is fine. Thanks again.

China is not a christian nation so abortion is just another procedure to them. Factor in the population problem and they look at it as one less mouth to feed, no biggie. It's a cultural thing so don't get so upset. Just like them eating dogs. It's only recently that they are starting to cherish dogs as pets.

I suggest that this is more of a question for a local who knows more local information, and who has access to a larger network of people who have had babies.

the major problem with china delivering babies is c-section being enforced and mandated, I know that now china has one of the highest c-section performed rate in the world and that is scary, the scary fact is that many doctors in china do not have the skill set to deliver a baby and many suggest or push for c-section delivery because it is less risky and more expensive, so they can make more money, and apparently a legit hospital which actually cares about the patients is really hard to find these days, yun da hospital is good but too crowded to get in unless you have "relationship" with someone from inside, so most times you are just gonna have to take what you can get....

The comment about relationship. You also need hong bao if you want to be treated by a specific doctor with a good reputation. It also mitigates the doctors desire to earn cash from performing unnecessary procedures to earn.

Call it a bribe, call it a gift, call it paying tribute, call it whatever, but it is normal in China. Perhaps another extension of 5000 years of fuedal culture.
When I went into hospital (not OBGYN) we were helped with connections, but also we needed to hong bao both the director of the department and the surgeon. This was about 20% of the treatment costs. On the flip side, we were only charged normal bed rates for the ICU, but this comes out of the hospitals pocket.
