Question number
1. For those who enjoy cooking tofu where do you find good tofu? Preferably firmer kinds. The stuff at the market, espesially firmer usually tastes weird and has this odd smoked flavor that over powers dishes. I like the tofu from Metro but they are ALWAYS out of it and rarely restock...
2. Does anyone know where to find tempeh or what it is called in Chinese? thank you! :) I live near Metro btw so preferably some places near to there.
The odd smoked stuff is in fact smoked tofu. There is also the fried tofu that is firm, looks the same, but is in fact not oily and unlike the smoked stuff doesn't taste like sh..
I wish I could give you names of the different types of tofu, to help you avoid getting the stuff you do not like.
Actually my wife did complain about a batch of tofu pi (bean dried bean curd) last week. She said it tasted wierd, and being a Chinese woman she assumed it was fake. There might have been a bad batch of beans that also affected yours. She got in in Carreour on Beijing Lu, South of Er Huan Lu, not the one in Beichen.
I usually send my helper to the market to get tofu and ikeep telling her to get the one without the smoked flavor but i don't think she is looking very hard for any other kinds and she is an older woman and isn't very good at...figuring things out...to put it nicely =P. Maybe one of these days i will have to go look myself so i can tell her what to get.
Perhaps if you can find the names of what you want, online, you can write it down/print it off for her.
Perhapas some helpful person on here can provide the names of the different tofu.
About the tempeh, the Dai restaurant that shares its space with the Jiaozi restaurant on 螺蜂路, nearby 北门街 and 圆通街, has a dish with Tempeh. Their menu is partly in English, so you could go there, have a bite, order the Tempeh dish, see if it's what you want and then ask them where they get that vegetable. Win-win.
My Tofu? I just get it from the market, there's loads of sorts, from the bland, crumbly white one, to the really yellow or brown kind.
