My post of a few days ago didn't get posted. But to answer prd and hubin it appears that this is not easy for you to get from China. Mia told me to pass on that the best option is to go to Bangkok where you can get the visa ina few days. Also flights from Bangkok will be a better price. It appears that India and China are still not on the best of terms, hence the delay and expense from China. Hope this helps.

I got an Indian visa in Chiang Mai. Takes 5 working days (though possibly less if you cross their palms with silver!) and lasts for 6 months.

China is not really more difficult than anywhere else. If you are not a citizen of the country that you are applying in, the Indian Consulate sends a wire to your home country requesting a background check, hence the 5 extra days processing time and the additional fee. It the same whether you're in the Netherlands, Thailand or China. There are two options, you either go to Beijing or Shanghai or Bangkok and wait for 5 days and do it in person or you hire a Travel/Visa Agency to submit the documents for you.

Actually it's no problem, I did it earlier this year. Yes, need to send everything to a friend to submit, but they will send p/p back by EMS directly. All details are very clear at www.vfs-india.com.cn/ and I see they've just started an office in Guangzhou too.
