Hi, I am looking for basalt rock, or any hard rock. I want to know where a building supply market is in kunming.

Just a suggestion, but if you are looking for rock, you might be better looking for a stone market.
There is a big stone market TaiPing. Take the KunAn expressway towards Dali. There is a tunnel just outside Kunming, through the tunnel, another kilometer on and through the toll gate, 500m on first exit (you have to pay 6rmb for 500m, it sucks). The stone market is one of the things you see as you drive down this road. You will see huge rocks at the roadside. It is on the right hand side (Maybe also extended to the LHS now).

Thanks. do you know if they are ornamental stone or for construction? I don't want anything fancy, they will be heated in a big fire and buried to make an underground oven.

I went to Stone Market at TaiPing today.

Most of it is construction stone, including lots of marble and other raw slabs that are cut into tiles. Like a factory operation.

Many types of rock and lots of off-cuts.
May just be what the OP needs

There is a small gravel quarry in Funming (40 minute bus trip from Kunming).

Could anyone tell me where a building supplies store is? And how do I get there... preferably by bus from Wenlinjie ^^

There is a stone market for decorative stones, including basalt and everything imaginable.

@Sarah....Not sure what you mean by a building supplies store, as the only thing resembling a general building supplies store is B&Q. But there are markets. What is it that you are looking for, and maybe we can suggest where you could buy it.

Sorry, I meant a general building store where I can find everything starting from paint over bathroom supplies to wallpapers.
